Amazing...

I always like seeing this thread, glad you brought it back Nook - It just amazes me
I got my 2013 last April 11...had the 1st freebie oil change at the dealer at 5,100 miles around October 15th, 2013 (was driving it about 20 miles a day or so then) JUST turned over 6,100 miles today. It's like another 5 weeks or so to the next 6 month service and I'll have only put on just over 1,000 miles in 6 months
I guess I'm a little frazzled as this is the least I've driven EVER, it's WEIRD! At least before when I was younger I would rack the miles on a car, OH, time to change the oil. I did change the oil out once at 1,500 - happy here tho, rather not have the wear & tear. Just amazes me how dependable these cars are. I am still completely enthralled driving this little bugger

A different member (Mazilla) owns a courier company. When he bought the company, the assets included not just 1 Yaris, but 20. IIRC, the least driven one had 350,000 miles on it and the most driven one close to 500,000. He kept one of them as a personal car, doing quite a few modifications. IIRC, he sold the rest of the fleet. But still, THAT number, with THAT MANY miles...EACH!

Other than updating Page 1 of this thread, his post around 2-20-14 was the first in a long tome. That post (#186 on CTScott's 'For Sale - Every single part off..' thread) indicates to me that he spends very little time here.......else he would know that he wouldn't need to explain to Scott what a midpipe is .

It is absolutely amazing how many miles/kilometers that a Toyota Yaris can achieve. There is a lot to be said for solid engineering.

To a point. There are plenty of plastic parts on the car that were installed for weight reduction that are easily broken and costly to replace. Case in point is the plastic underpanels in the wheelwells and engine compartment. those arw flimsy as hell and cost 200 bucks (not including shipping) to replace if you have to do them all. Certain interior panels have clips that break if you breathe right too.

I've lost at least 70% of my wheel wells/splashpanels are long gone, and they've been replaced twice. I've since moved onto some stuff you can use for bathroom walls that is thick and flexible (but white) a couple of months ago, less than $9 for a 4'x8' sheet and I have lots left.

He changes his spark plugs and his serpentine belt every 100,000 miles. He also runs synthetic oil and changes his oil and filter every 5,000 miles.

I can't find the post, but he had a guarantee on his Wal-Mart battery that by 2010 was no longer offered. He was getting his battery replaced every year for free by Wal-Mart (I imagine that he took the battery to Wal-Mart each year and the quarantee must have allowed free replacement if not meeting a certain benchmark). I don't think I've ever seen a battery warranty duration of longer than 5 years, so I imagine that warranty is no longer in place (assuming he replaced the OEM also at 1 year). IIRC, he does all of the repairs and
maintenance himself.

Why would a battery wear out in only a year?

He seemed to maintain/replace things prematurely. Like replacing his synthetic oil every 2 weeks. Total waste of money. If you're driving 5,000 highway miles every 2 weeks or so, you could run synthetic for 15,000-20,000 miles and it would come out nearly as clean as new.

I guess it was important that the car start and last a long time because it was for his business so maybe that's why he did it. If Im Walmart Im not replacing a good battery for free though so it must have been bad somehow.

I agree though 5000 miles with constant driving on a synthetic oil change seems like overkill.

I'm assuming that that they replies above using the past tense should be using the present tense. I'm thinking he still has the car. IIRC, a member asked him (soon after he hit 500,000 miles) if he planned to keep the car and he replied yes, and that he had no plans to get rid of it anytime soon. I think his original plan (when he was still driving so many miles) was to try to make it to 1,000,000 miles. If he was still keeping up his early pace, he'd be reasonably close to that right now.

Yep. My 3rd Battery overall/2nd replacement was from Wal-Mart (OEM = 2yrs 11 months and 138k miles, 1st replacement = Sears 1yr Guar. = 3yrs and about 87-88k miles). Just shy of one 1 year I took the car in...thinking the battery would fail and I'd get a new one for free. Unfortunately, the battery passed the test Wal-Mart put it through . I replaced it about 4 months later (only 48-49k miles on it) with the NAPA Legend (the model in CTScott's Yarii) at 274k on the car. What a great battery (for many reasons). Corrosion appeared fairly soon after install on both previous cheap replacement batteries, but not one bit on the NAPA Legend. Overall cost re the Legend = almost the same to the penny as the Wal-Mart and Sears combined (about $130), but well worth it, IMO.

OR....Perhaps (my wild imagination) Trini had a friend there who just marked it as not passing the test ().
