Yaris Center Pillar Recall - Toyota Yaris Forums

Many of you may be aware that there is a Toyota recall (SSC 90C) for certain 2006-2007 Yaris vehicles related to the center pillar sound insulator. Toyota says if there is a severe frontal collision and the seatbelt pretensioners deploy (explode) the foam sound insulator installed in the B pillars adjacent to the pretensioner may catch fire. The recall simply "removes" the sound insulator. I called Toyota and asked if the interior would be noisier with the insulator removed and, of course, they said it would not be noisier. I asked "why was the insulator installed if it did not quiet the car" but of course they won't admit anything. My silly little question to this forum is - should I have the B pillar sound insulator removed (just to be super safe) or should I say the heck with it, I like my Yaris as quiet as it can be? What do you'all think? Thanks.

Wow, this is really old news.

You're call. You could probably remove it yourself if you're handy.

It's called a recall for a reason, it's not worth risking your life or injury to keep the car "quiet". I took mine in a week after I got my notice, and the sound has stayed the same.

I didnt notice a difference in sound..... it only took an hour or so to get it done and its free..... so why not? :(

They did mine when I went in for an oil change. Took about the same amount of time as usual, about a hour.

I didn't want the dealer to do it. I'll do it myself whenever I get around to it, but I'll replace the sound proofing with some B-Quiet.

What is B quiet? Also, I wonder how hard it is to access the insulator?

Members have removed it themselves. I understand it is easy.

I've never bothered, because I don't think it is a real hazard.

I avoid taking my car to the dealership.

It's a chunk of foam that sits behind the front seat belt assemblies. Removing the lower B pillar gives easy access to them. Crashy's seat belt tensioners deployed and the foam blocks were still in place. They were slightly melted where they contacted the tensioner. It's probably worth removing them or having them removed.

Took mine in about a year ago and they removed each one in under 2 minutes.

It's pretty unlikely to happen, but if you just happened to be the one who got trapped in the car in a wreck and it caught on fire from that bit of foam you decided not to remove, even though the Toyota dealer would do it free, wouldn't you feel stupid while you were burning to death?

Too right. IT'S FREE!
I had my 200u7 done ,and the noise was no different. Extraction was free, and that's all there is to it!
If your iPhone was likely to catch fire, you'd have THAT fixed, wouldn't you? Well, the car is worth a sh!tload more than the phone - just do it.

I had mine done also.
Didn't detect any extra noise after removal.

took mine to the dealer to have removed. I didn't notice any noise difference. If you want to keep it, keep a fire extinguisher in the car just in case. One should probably have a fire extinguisher in the car for roadside emergencies anyway.

oh.. i always have some weird noise in the B-pillar area, near the floor ever since they "fished" in there..
it sounds like a screw/bolt is rolling around the bottom. Lately, it sounds like a ring, sliding back and forth on a metal string when braking or accelerating.

I’d be more concerned about the full tank of fuel catching alight and exploding. In a ‘severe’ frontal collision, a bit of foam that ‘might’ catch fire is the least of my worries.

Gas tanks rarely explode. You can even shoot it, and it wont explode.

But when you're knocked out, and the car starts to catch on fire then it'll be your concern. Sorta. Since you're knocked out.
