AC to Wrightwood Open!

Today was a great day in the Yaris

The section of Angeles Crest Highway (2) from Newcombs Ranch to Wrightwood (33 mile stretch) has been closed for over 5 years. Today around noon it was re-opened to the public and I was lucky enough to be one of the first out on the newly paved twisties

Including my morning excursions to Azusa/SGV (39), East Fork, GMR and loops on Big Tujunga off AC I logged over 200 miles of canyons today (over 300 miles total including the hwy commutes to/from the mountain).

We'll meet up at the Shell station around 10:30 AM and leave when everyone gets there, no later than 11:00 AM.
If Anyone want's to meet up in Wrightwood for lunch, we should arrive between 12:00PM - 12:30PM, just look for the cars to meet us for lunch.

What: Micro Image Cruise Angeles Crest Highway Cruise
When: Monday, June 1'st 2009 10:30 AM - 3:00 PM
Where:
Jay's Shell Gas Station
4530 Angeles Crest Hwy
La Canada Fltrdg, CA 91011
(818) 790-3836

Everyone is welcome to join us, please be respectful and

NO RACING
NO SPEEDING
NO BURNOUTS
NO DRIFTING
NO TAILGATING (leave plenty of distance between the car in front of you)
NO CROSSING THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINE
HEADLIGHTS ON AT ALL TIMES

Please watch out for:
Rocks, Gravel, Dust
Bears, Big Horn Sheep, Raccoons, Skunks, Chipmunks, Squirrels, Bambos
Cyclist, Hikers, Police, Park Rangers, Caltrans

Please slow down to a safe speed before pulling completely off the road if you need to stop. Make sure there is enough room for everyone to stop.
If you can't keep up, don't drive beyond your comfort zone, you'll catch up to us at the next stop.

When gas was cheaper, I use to drive all over the place. Now I think twice. Looks like you had a good time.

Parts of the road were damaged by a storm, there's a new bridge that I didn't get a good pic of. It was closed back in 2004. I heard Caltrans guys have been driving up & down the road honking their horns and making noise to try and get all the bears and big horn sheep that have "moved in" away from the area in preparation for the re-opening. I didn't see any today but there were lots of squirrels.

Best time to drive up here is late morning to mid-day, midweek, non-holiday. That's when there's the least traffic and police presence. I'm planning to go up again Friday morning on my motorcycle.

Someone set it up if you want to go for a cruise up here, I'm down to go whenever.

53 miles of twisties

I absolutely hate living in an area without real hills, let alone mountains, and every damn road is snapped to a grid.

Jeff can you post a Google map or something showing this road on a map of the area? I had a hard time explaining where this is to someone.

I repeated this drive today, on my motorcycle this time. Even more fun :)

How's Monday June 1'st for everyone? We can make it a late morning run (just after traffic) with Lunch in Wrightwood and some drinks at Newcombs Ranch on the return... should get us home before the rush hour traffic.
