Is that bad for automatic transmission?

I just wonder if I can shift to position "3" from "D" when the car is moving? What about position "N"?

Thanks

That's good to know. I wasn't sure either whether it was bad to switch from "D" to "3" while moving.

Yea you can move the shifter anywhere down from N at any speed w/o damage. Just dont pop it into R ;)

is what happens when you mash the gas :). Its a shift like any other... so long as you dont downshift at too high of a speed, its kewl.

I think the shifting pattern of the Yaris' auto transmission is designed to allow easy shifting between "D" and "3" to give the driver a taste of manual shifting.
However, shift to "N" only when there is a real need and when it it absolutely safe to do so.

Just don't step on the gas while shifting, so if you're in drive let off the gas, shift into third then continue (vise versa), from my understanding this is ideal and better. Its hard on the tranny reving the engine while shifting and puts wear and tear on it. Ultimately for auto you want to be in drive for the best economy (not only fuel but also less wear and tear on the drivetrain) and performance for normal driving conditions

Funny story, on my 91 z28 my shifter cable broke so i had to hop under the car to shift gears (auto btw), the shifter did nothing but move back and forth. When ppl would ride my ass i'd put it into R, they'd see the backup lights and let me tell you this works a hell of alot better than the brake check, they'd stay like 100ft back :)
