Revs but no acceleration?

My girlfriend and I have a 2009 Yaris that is having some issues. Today, we went to start it but it stalled out on the first start. After another attempt, started fine. When we hit the highway, the car maxed out at 35 miles per hour and the engine was revving at high rpm. I am guessing that there is a transmission issue here, but I have no idea how to proceed.

Any ideas on what could be causing issues?

So we are talking about an automatic transmission I gather. Sounds like it is not getting out of first gear. Have you tried manually shifting it? 1 - 2 - 3 - D to see if you can make it change gears.

It is automatic. I did try to manually shift it isn't making any difference.

Not sure about a shift solenoid. It's possible.

Check the transmission fluid? Perhaps, replace the fluid if never done before?

Sounds like your car is in limp mode. If there is something wrong that can cause damage it will force "limp mode" to get you home without destroying more parts. My old Mitsubishi did the same thing. Could be wrong but it could help your search Idk.
