New seats and how i did it !!!!

Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago i bought two seats (sport style or race style).
To install the driver side seat it was easy. But, the passager one.....was not so easy at all,
because of those fu***ng sensors of course.

First, here's my new seats....

And this is the first part of the installation....

One thing to keep in mind (very important); Never disconnect any sensors during the installation (except the seat belt one, there's no probleme if you disconnect this one).
If one or more sensors is disconnected, you have to go to the dealer as soon as possible to reset the system.

Here's how those sensors works...

There's four sensors under the passenger seat called "OCSAA" (Occupant Classification System for Advanced Airbag) and they works depending the weight of the passenger. Those sensors send a signal to the "ECU" (Electronic Control Unit) of the system (also under the seat) to determine the speed of the airbag explosion.

Those sensors support the total weight of the passenger and the seat with a bolt (fix point)on each of them.

Here's some pics to explain (sorry the texts in the pics are in french but i traduced them)....

There's four sensors under the passenger seat and they works depending the weight of the passenger.
A "fix point" (bolt) move beside the sensor to send a signal to the ECU.

This is one of the "fix points" of the seat and the sensors

One part of the sensor assembly move depending the weight of the passenger.

The rear sensor (right side) and his bolt (fix point) on the seat.

The front and rear fix point.

The front right sensor...

The rear right sensor...

Those four sensors without the seat.....

And now some modifications to install my new seat.
Of course i kept the original tracks but i made new brackets to put the seat at the same height of the driver one. If i kept the original brackets, the seat will be 4 inch too high. Nothing was broken, damaged or cut, just in case i have to put back the original seat !!!

...to be continued tomorrow.... (sunday).........

Looking good! So are you keeping the sensors in working order with the new seats?

For the next part....

I had to re-aligned the front right sensor (next first image), to be sure it has enough room between the sensor and the top bracket (next second and third images).

Yes, it's my sensual knee at the left !!!!!

The top bracket is installed + you can see (in color) the next part of this modification to be come this week.

Now the rear left sensor. It's very important (of course) to keep in place the original bracket who hold the seat belt "buckle". And just put the new bracket where the sensor will be.

I come back this week with the rest of that modification.

Really COOL. What about the pressure sensor that is inside the passenger seat? You can't take the seat out without disconnecting that.

Well, in my Yaris (2007 CE) there's no sensor inside the seat,
just those four sensors. These ones are "pressure" sensors, like i explained in the begining of that post.

It controls the explosion of the airbag, depending of the weight of the passenger.

Fantastic fabrication skills! There has to be an easier way!

The only sensor I am concerned about is the pressure sensor which will activate the airbag. The other one is the seatbelt sensor. Either find a resistor to bypass this one or disconnect the alarm.

If we put our heads together we can do it!

BTW - those seats look fantastic - where did you get them???

Like i try to explain.....

There's 4 pressure sensors who control the airbag !!
Those 4 sensors are connected to a box called ECU and that ECU is connected to the airbag. So that assembly of four sensor control the airbag in combination with the seat belt sensor.

But during the modification you can disconnect the seat belt sensor but not the pressure ones.

And for me i thing there's no other way, you have to keep these sensors and make them fonctional.

My understanding is that the ECU *DOES* use the seatbelt sensor during airbag deployment to decide how much force/speed to use when opening the bag as an unbelted occupant has different needs than a belted occupant.

Yes, in combination with the sensors who will tell to the ECU if it's an adult or a child sitting on the seat. So, the speed/force of the airbag deployment will be different.
That's what the 4 sensors are for !!

Ok, This is the next and final step.........finally !!!

This is the front left bracket i made;

...with the sensor....

Almost finished...

...the brackets are now complete;

I did a cut in the middle let move a part of the original track.

Now the seat supports.

The brackets are ready now to receive the new seat.

...job done completly...

Now i have two great looking seats for my little yaya !!!

Ok, now it's time to test those sensors (the airbag lamp in dash)...

First, i put nothing on the seat (I make that test because the new seats are a bit heavier than the original ones.)
And i buckle-up each seat belts..
...and i sit on the passanger seat. After a few seconds i get out of the car (so the seat is empty once again).

Résults....everything works very good !!!

JM350 approuved !!

sweet too bad the stock black covers dont fit over the bracket to cover the harsh lines of the brackets..

maybe you could paint them black or something to match :)

There's no problem with the driver seat 'cause there's no sensor to deal with.
You just have to unpluged the seat belt connection (and re-pluged it when your modification is finished).
I didn't take any pictures of the driver side brackets 'cause is too easy to make the modification.

So don't be scared to change your driver side seat, it's very very very much more easier and simple to do it than the passenger side. It tooks me around 3 hours to do it and around 8 hours for the passenger seat.

Good luck to both of you guys and if you need some tricks....ask me by "PM".
