Overheating Problem
Dear friends,
I bought a 2011 vitz hb from japan. The same as yaris hatchback with bumps in the front and some damage in the radiator wich i got repaired. The problem i believe is that the cool water is not getting to cool down the engine. So, its like the water is stuck. The engine overheats after 20 mins aprox. But the water level in the coolant Reserve is full or near to it. Might the cause of this be the water pump? I cant take it to a mechanic because My city is full of inclined roads, and im afraid to burn the engine before to arrive a mechanic. Thank you |

Water pumps tend to leak, not stop pumping all together. My guess would be the thermostat.

thermostat stuck closed could also cause overheating.

The thermostat being stuck closed would prevent the coolant from getting to the temperature sensor, which is mounted to the radiator. Also, that sensor being bad could prevent the fan from running.

Fan was running normal, before repair the radiator, so i assume its ok after reassemble. I also placed an obd connector and checked the coolant temperature. Reads up to 90 in normal circulation, but when i run up an inclined road, the temperature increases near to 100 where i stop to prevent damage.

The reservoir is not directly connected to the rest of the cooling system.
Have you already removed the tin cover when the engine is cold? the system should be filled with water almost up to the top. (sorry for this stupid english) |

As suggestion from a friend, I found today a used radiator from a previous model (99) things are pretty similar. Tomorrow Im replacing the radiator and keep testing.
Thank you all for the input, I will double check this time that fan is correctly plugged |

Dear friends, I have solved the problem.
Turns out that the radiator was heavily damaged in only one side of it. Sadly that side prevents the water to circulate normally. So, as mentioned I purchased another used radiator from a yaris 99 and after a few modifications, this car is COOL :) Thank you all |

good to hear. for future reference, this has always been my advice re car problems: do the cheapest/easiest one to replace among all the possible culprits. this is, of course, if the possible culprits haven't been narrowed down. (e.g. in your case you sustained front damage, so you don't have to follow the same order below)
in this example (overheating problems): 1) check for leaks 2) bleed radiator 3) replace radiator cap 4) replace thermoswitch (if present) as thermostats goes bad much more rarely 5) replace thermostat 6) replace water pump (and do the timing belt/tensioner bearings if it's not a yaris and uses a belt rather than a chain) 7) replace the radiator 8) head gasket replacement Hope this helps. |
