oil viscosity in 2009 yaris

hello,
I have a 2009 5dr multimode hatchback yaris.
In Israel the weather is hot in the summer and the temperatures aren't hot during the spring and winter.
when i bought my yaris, the service interval is 15,000 KM or 1 year. as stated by the dealership.
the oil viscosity the dealership put in is 10w-30 and it's semi-synthetic.

the car has made 6100 km since august 2009 (i don't drive much since i have a car from work sometimes).
i want to preserve the engine in top shape.i was recommended to put synthetic oil and i chose the ROYAL PURPLE brand (we don't have amsoil, shell, castrol in here since the companies don't import them).

has anyone here who's using RP synthetic oil and can recommend a different viscosity?the manual says 5w-30 and NOT the 10w-30.can someone recommend the proper viscosity due to the climate?

can i shortage the service intervals?

In hotter weather it is ok to use 10W30. The oil just remains a little thinker when cold. And service interval has more to do with how you drive your car than a set number.

If all you do is short trips I'd recommend 6000-8000km with full synthetic and slightly less with regular oil. If most of your driving is long trips then you can stretch it out longer to the recommended service interval. Don't worry about the oil being more than a year old though if you don't drive that much.

my manual says 0w-20 is recommended and if there is 5w-30 you can use it but it needs to be replaced at the next oil change.and about royal purple?has anyone operated with it in hot climate?

Can you get Motul 8100 X-Max LL01 5w-30? or Total(ELF) QuartZ Platinum 0w-30? These are real synthetic oils. IDK where the idea that RP is a top syn comes from. AFAIK it semi syn - in U.S. oils do not have to be true synthetic to say "Full Synthetic' on the product label. Insanity!

Its not a matter of horsepower its a matter of fuel economy.

That explains your manual's recommendation of 0W-20 oil. In the U.S. Toyota still recommends 5W-30 for the 1500cc 1NZ-FE engine, though a service bulletin says 5W-20 may be used.

And I think in Canada it's 0W-20 or 5W-20 on the 710 cap.

I just googled prices on the Motul and Total brand oils.... 5L jugs go for like $45 on the internet (plus shipping)... or $10 a quart. Unless I could get away with 20K mile intervals it'd be cheaper to just continue doing my 10K intervals with Mobile1 for $26. I'm sure those oils would be fine for around 15k... but 20... errr... i dunno.

synthetic oil

Hey matanfr,
You don't want to go to a higher viscosity oil (10w-30 compared to 5w-30), because they both offer the same protection no matter how hot it gets. The first number represents how viscous (how easily the oil flows), at colder temps and the upper number represents how viscous the oil is at high temps. So, there's no difference between the two in a hot environment like you're in.

Mobile 1 has been around forever and offer excellent products. Can you get that? They have a 0w-30 Advanced Fuel Economy oil, and the Extended Performance oil that will offer the same, superior engine protection for 15,000 miles, or 1 full year. Here's a link to Mobile 1's website...

https://www.mobiloil.com/usa-english...ilOption2.aspx

Fully synthetic oil offers many benefits, but you have to pay about $7/qrt but it's well worth it. I have over 300,000 miles on all my vehicle except my newly acquired 2008 Yaris and never had any engine trouble.

The perceived performance difference can be great. M1 0w-30 is not a long life oil. look for ACEA A5/B5-04 or -08 for long drain capable mid HTHS oils. M1 5w-30 is semi synthetic and over priced compared to some of Mobils other oils (like the TDT or the HM 10w-30)

Uh, that 1.5 is not "low load/ low power engine". Its 70hp/L, If it was a ford 4.6 modular it would make 320+ HP. is that low output? NO.

Correct, I didn't say the 0W-30 was the Extended Life Oil. The Advanced Fuel Economy oil is the one that comes in 0-W30. The Extended Life Oil comes in 5W-30 I believe.

And Mobile 1 5W-30 is fully synthetic, it's not a semi-synthetic. The Mobil 1 website explains it all.

I'm rather amazed at that. Back in the '60s and '70s, only high strung race engines put out that sort of power, and this one will also happily grunt uphill at 1400 RPM. And then along come young whippersnappers berating the Yaris for having no power!

My '92 Honda CBR 250RR makes 45hp stock @ 16500rpm. That's 180hp/L. But it only makes a lowly 18lb/f torque 12000rpm.

Yep. Motorcycles have put out some astounding specific power figures for a long time, by buzzing up to really high RPM by automotive standards.
