cool, i just cleaned out my windshield cowl with soap and water and the odor went away. usually its from debris and moisture sitting inside the windshild cowl which causes mildew or mold thus the smell. but it seems like this s.b. has to do with the evaporator housing getting stinky.

Andy, whats the labor time on this one? if its not an all day thing maybe i can setup an appointment one of these weekends and have it done, plus come to think of it i have to do that silly seatbelt recall too.

INteresting...is there a printable TSP somewhere? Carmax NEVER believes me when I bring the car in for some TSP-covered repair (like my formerly ticking windshield). SO, I've learned to have it printed and ready to hand to them when they look at me like I'm an idiot.

wtf ..... only covered by a warranty?! what about the stinky older yaris's?! are they going to have to live with their stench til the junkyard?!

ugh this makes me annoyed.
if there is a problem with the smell they should be doing this for everyone not just those who have a new-ish warranty.

I have the PDF of it. I'll email it to Thomas for posting with the rest (along with about six more that came out since I sent them to him). In the meantime PM me your email if you need it.

I've never to my knowledge had a car with a cabin air filter. Can't imagine what one's needed for, actually. Maybe there's one in my Yaris, I haven't pulled out the glovebox.

So does the odor only come from the vents? My whole interior smells, just all the time, like mildew/mold.

So did this problem wind up being solely the cabin air filter, or were other fixes involved. MINIs (former two cars) have a cabin air filter and people often complained about "old socks" smell. Turn out it was the filter every time. There is DIY info on changing the interior air filter in my '09 Yaris manual, so I was wondering if other components were involved.
