Whining/Whirring noise (videos)

I notice an occasional, intermittent whining/whirring noise at idle and during acceleration. It usually occurs at low speeds, idle, and when I bring the car to a stop (usually 50 percent of the time). It often disappears when I accelerate past 40 mph/3000 rpm. It's hard to replicate, but I caught it on video below.

Normal:

Unusual:

Any ideas?

Bump.

Dealership hasn't been able to identify the source of the noise nor have they ruled anything out, and it's grown both louder and more persistent since I posted this.

Anyone have any guesses?

Wow that's pretty dramatic. Be cause it happens after every shift I'm thinking it's the transmission.

I think the standard advice is drive it till it breaks/gets really bad. The only other course of action would be remove the trans and inspect it. Then replace it with another one and see if the noise goes away.

Oh wait the car wasn't moving! Duh.

Loose engine/transmission mounts?

Hello,
My yaris abruptly started doing the same thing this morning. Did you have any luck finding out what the noise was? Has anything gone horribly wrong since posting this?

Hi, my PM's don't seem to be going through to you, but the shop that did the most thorough inspection concluded it was the alternator, ruling out the water pump and pulleys as possible causes. I should mention that while the noise has grown louder and more persistent, I've been driving with this problem ever since I made this post back in May, though it's the kind of thing that can go out at any time.

The general estimate I've received from a few shops has been between $360-$420 dollars, and can be done in only a few hours, so it's nothing all that major or expensive. Good luck!

The alternator on my sons echo made noise for two or three years.

The generator on my VW bus made none before it seized.

Late reply, but: that sounded exactly like my failing alternator before I had it replaced at 240,000 miles. Sound is gone, and price was about what you said it cost for me too. I had described it on idle as "a small plane flying overhead".
