Yaris 2001 The engine yellow/orange warning light in the dashboard

Hi all hope someone can help

I by mistake put 1L of home heating oil in the car use the wrong pump at the station. I was told at the time just to fill the car and it would run out though the engine. But now i have a problem with the warning light and the car is chugging in first and second and when the car is sitting in neutral.

I have changed the air filter and spark plugs and later today i will do a oil change.

If anyone else has any other ideas on stopping the chugging or will i have to take it to a garage.

thanks

Colin

Keep topping up the tank with petrol. You also may need to do a good cleaning of the fuel system.

You can try adding fuel system cleaner to the tank, but you may have to replace the fuel filter (which is in the tank) and may have to have the injectors properly cleaned. In the meantime just keep diluting it by keeping the tank full. The engine light is likely on due to misfiring from the plugs fouling.

let it run through and keep adding gas as Scott said. Once you think it is no longer in the tank than see how the car is running. If problems arise than you can fix them as they are. The fuel pump/screen may need to be replaced but they also ay not so your best bet would be to wait and find out.

You can do a reasonable cleaning of the injectors with a good fuel additive. A full cleaning requires connection of a cleaning system to the fuel rail or removal of the injectors.

For the filter you do have to get into the tank, which is under the back seat.

You can reset it yourself by disconnecting the battery for a minute. It may self clear before that, depending on the code.

If it was me, I would go with the Seafoam treatment. Anyone else have any other suggestion on which additive he should use?

I am not sure if seafoam is sold over there. Any Techron based cleanser would be fine or the Lucas products.

Seafoam seems a bit on the strong side for me. Unless it's an old car I would tend to stay away as I would be worried about seals etc. Keep in mind I have no evidence of this, more or less following the precautionary principle.

I'd use a lighter fuel injector cleaner and let the fuel run through and see if it clears itself. If the CEL no longer illuminates than it's likely clean and good to go. If the CEL lights up again consistently after a few new tanks of gas, than I'd probably think of something like SeaFoam
