Interior: knobs broken & illumination issue - replacement?

Wife has 09 Yaris hatchback with a broken air recirculate switch. One day it made a noise and now the switch moves freely. Has anyone had this happen?

On my 2013 Yaris hatchback, the fan position switch broke and sinks into the dash if you push it in slightly while turning it. My illumination is out on the temperature knob.

Are there HVAC knobs an issue on all Yaris? Or do we just have bad luck? We've got a baby due in a month and I want everything working, so I'm hoping to try and repair it all tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

rotary HVAC knobs

There's at least one good thread here on these sad HVAC knobs. With photos of front and back during cable repair. (Unless under Photobucket ransom.)

Thank you! I found a post, but it referenced the sedan. Does the HB also have a mechanical wire I might be able to snap back in?

It happened to me once because a chopstick got lodged under the moving part that changes the air output location. It just popped off the back of the knob and went right back on without any problems. Make sure you remove the glove box and look for any obstructions near the cabin air filter housing.
