What i have learned from my Yaris

My automatic Yaris Sedan have taught me to warm up the car every morning, and drive slower until the "COOL" light goes off. However i gota say that it's kinda annoying to see High RPMs. It won't shift to 3rd(Is it 3rd?) to maintain 50MPH right on 2K RPM mark until the "COOL" light is off.The weather here is getting colder, and it takes even longer to get to the normal operating temperature for the engine lol. What have you learned from your Yaris?

That is normal.
My 2007 will not go into fourth gear until the Cool LED goes off. Also the shifts from first, second and third are also at a higher rpm.
Designed to bring everything up to temperature faster.

Sounds like a good way to take care of the engine. I can deal with it I guess. Haven't had mine in cold weather yet.

I have to admit that it's slowly 'training me' to drive differently in the morning. My worry is when the Winter weather hits northern Minnesota, how long is this going to take? Wish I had a heated garage but my little Yaris HB is gonna have to tough it out in the cold. Will the -20 degree days mean 5 miles of high-RPM warm-ups?

I haven't really learned anything from my 07 other than I find it more fun than my Tercel. I guess if I had to mention something, like if a gun were put to my head, it would be that I wouldn't ever buy one with an auto...stick only. It feels like a completely different car that way.

Last winter I lived in Jackson Hole, WY and it regularly got down to -20* and I had no issues with my Yaris. Granted, mine is a stick, not an auto., but I started it up and let it idle while I cleared the ice & snow off of the windows. By the time I started driving the heater was starting to put out some warm air. My commute was only 6 miles, but the first 1/2 mile was literally uphill (I was careful not to get the RPM's too high going up that hill). By the time I got 2 miles from home I was nice & toasty and the "cool" light was out.

You should be OK as long as you don't rev it up too much too soon.

Mine hasn't taken more than 2 miles for the cool light to go out. Most of the time if its really cold I plug the block heater in and that helps a lot.

That's far from a new feature though. I think that Toyota's have had that feature on their cars for a while now.

For example, my dad owned a 92 Toyota Previa, and it would idle at a higher RPM and wouldn't shift into 4th gear until the engine was at it's normal temperature.

I think that it's probably staying in 3rd gear since the automatic yaris only has 4 gears, and there's no way it would stay in 2nd at 50MPH and would only be doing 2k RPM. It's a pretty smart little car though.
