so you're not even running an air filter or did you just have it off?

I like how the turbo is on top of the motor so it can be seen.

I have been running a filter over the years, with this turbo I wanted to try a velocity stack. A 6'' air filter is available though. Since pieces of spark plug already had their rounds inside my motor, dust doesn't concern me at this moment.

My buddy has his intake direct vented in through a custom "port" where the driver's headlight would be

He said that seeing as how he is always running at high rpm whatever comes in he feels is disintegrated anyway.

It looks like a BLOX 6 inch velocity stack air filter would fit right on there...

I think K & N also makes one, although I like the BLOX better because it's a dry element and I don't need to mess with oiling it.

And ruin the effect of his nicely radiused velocity stack. That curved edge (all of it) is critical to draw in and accelerate the incoming air.

Hey Garm,

I was just thinking of engine longevity from not sucking abrasive dirt particles into it.

The full 180 degrees of the velocity stack profile actually extends well into the air filter because it attaches to bottom edge of the skirt...

...and those 6 inch filters are massive.

This is what I was referencing in a previous response. My buddy's SR20 set up has:

With the rpm's produced along with speeds he pretty much has not seen any issues inside his engine from running with a "direct" porting through the driver's side headlamp assembly. Sure, there could be a possibility, but when you are racing you are always aware of what is going on and used to taking calculated risks.

Competition is a totally different mindset where winning races outweighs making an engine last 100,000 miles.

Running like that would creep me out. What happens if another racer's tire kicks up even a small rock and it gets sucked into the turbine impeller and into the engine?

Ive seen many drag cars run the headlight ducting, nothing wrong with that. Road racing, yea a lot of debris come from sticky tires ahead. I do have a screen in front of turbo in case somebody gets the bright idea to chuck a pebble in my turbo during a meet.
