New Yaris owner! A few questions...

I just bought an 08 Yaris, preferred package it looks like, 60/40 rear seats, 5 speed, 97k miles. A few questions...

Rear seat - when folding that down, the "60" part doesn't go lay down flat. Is that normal?

Aux input doesn't work - the cd/aux button doesn't even prompt a response

I bought this car to be my daily and my courier car. My second job requires me to drive around 1700 miles a week, and I couldn't swing a prius so I bought this lol.

At this mileage, what kind of maintenance should be done?

Any known issues to look out for?

Best weight oil?

Eventually I'd like some alloy wheels with new tires, are oem options available for that?

Thanks for all the help!

For the fold flat to do so, you have to first slide the two sections forward with the slider lever.

The AUX button won't work unless a cable is plugged into the AUX jack. If it still doesn't do anything with a cable plugged in, pop the plastic area that the jack is mounted to and see if the cable is unplugged from the back of the jack.

At 97K, you might want to change the gear oil, do the belt if it hasn't been done, fresh coolant if that hasn't been done, plugs, and clean the MAF sensor and throttle body. You should get many times your current mileage out of it without a problem.

Make sure there is a cabin air filter installed behind the glove box to prevent the AC from getting stinky (a common problem).

And, with 3000 miles before 100K, check the control arm bolts (of which there was a 100K mile warranty extension because of). www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27658

Oil: 5W30

Wheels and tires - OEM alloys are a bit heavy and expensive. Check out Micro Image for good deals on reasonable aftermarket wheels.

Got the seats folded down, thanks man!

Ordered an aux adapter from ebay, I think the unit is defected so best just to cut it out.

Ordered a cabin air filter, while driving it smells kind of "enginey" lol if that makes sense, could that be the cause?

The smelly AC issue tends to be more of a musty or swampy smell. An enginey smell may indicate an exhaust leak or some oil that dripped or leaked and is cooking off.

Just wanted to update my ownership experience.

I bought and sold a couple Yari and landed with my long haul car in August of 2014. 2011 Hatch, power everything, keyless, cruise, manual, got it with 70k miles. As of today I'm at 207k. I'm going to join the ranks of high mileage Yaris bros. Next oil change will include a Blackstone Labs oil analysis to gauge engine health.

I've had an issue with flat tires on my long journeys, so next week I will begin to carry a full size spare and floor jack at all times. Also had a rotor warping issue, so stoptech rotors were installed and have fixed that.

Aside from that little stuff, this little car has been taking the 2000 miles a week with stride.

My other vehicles currently, are a 2015 GMC Sierra, and 2013 Acura ILX 6 speed.

Update,

My 2011 has needed nothing more than common maintenance. 277k and going up everyday,

I'm currently closing the deal on a 2012 5speed SE with 50k to slowly start taking over. I want to take is car to 500k+ but I want to have another one waiting in case issues pop up.

Still getting 37mpg, I did a Scion XD seat that seats, bunch of LED's, expensive front rotors, and everything else is stock and doing great.

On my way home with my latest purchase. 2012 SE, 5 speed, pretty loaded, 51k, got it for a little under $7k.

Super happy with it! Should be a good backup for my main Yar going for big miles

what is this "maintenance valve clearance" stuff?
I was under the impression that this has a shim and bucket set up, so "maintenance" does not exist...

am I mistaken?

Check your owners manual. Theres a requirement to check the clearances at 60,000 miles. At least there is on my 09. At some point they might eliminate the check because

In actual operation this check is almost never done and its rare to hear about a problem. But as the valves wear the clearance will become less and if it gets small enough the exhaust valves will burn. Sometimes the clearance gets bigger which isnt as bad but will make the engine noisier.

I don't have an owners manual. if valves "wear" you would loose clearance at cam/bucket resulting in rattles and reduced performance. it could burn the valve, but only if it were to wear enough that the spring lost tension. I don't know how it can decrease clearance. I guess if the spring was pulling the valve into the head, but then you have other problems.

I just don't understand why an inspection when the repair is thousands of dollars... it's probably cheaper to just replace the engine....

You got a 3rd gen MT SE with 50k miles for under 7k? So jealous! I've been looking forever and haven't seen anything like that. How did you find it?

Honestly. I just got on a kick about needing a backup Yaris due to my main car approaching 300k (my plan is to take this car to 500k+), but that will require repairs at times, and when that happens, I'll need something.

So I hit Autotrader, searched 2012+ manual transmission only, and this one was one of 12 or so in 500 miles. It was originally listed for $7900, I talked to the dealer, planned to go up there that Saturday, but slept in instead. I looked again the next week, and the price was reduced to $6900, so I called and put down $1,000 and picked it up Saturday. I was expecting a rough car, and instead got a super nice, almost new appearing Yaris. New tires, perfect interior, etc. Now with the mods it's a really nice car.

Truly just lucked out.
