I know where you're coming from - I had a Miata for six months during a temporary assignment to the West Coast back in 1993. I have to say though that a tiny car with a big moonroof is mighty close.

Keeping the Miata idea going,a regular 140hp Miata will thrash most cars when the road gets twisty a 250hp turbo'd Miata will just widen the smile and a V8 Monster Miata will take care of just about everything else,Aftermarket add ons are probably a 3rd after Honda and Mustang, If you dont like the convertable idea just keep the hard top on ,great forum and many clubs.Buying a low mileage first generation Miata will set you back $4 -$7k,second Generation $7-$12k.good luck and we wanna see picks of whatever you buy.
PS There are several Miata clubs in Toronto including the Miataphiles who's club credo is=

An informal group of young Toronto Miataphiles... 100+ and going strong... No
rules, no political B.S. or correctness, no president, no dues, no corner left
un-bruised. This is not a mid-life-crisis car... this is a hardcore, fun-as-hell
lifestyle... We do what we want, when we want... We drive hard, play hard, race
hard and talk a big game... All disputes settled with 4 simple words... Line It
Up Beeatch!

dude, seriously, get an s2000, there's no way to go wrong with it.

it doesn't even compare to civics, crx, riced out hondas or del sol LOL

seriously, if you get a 2004 comes with the f22c1 8000 rpm redline and 240 hp still getting awesome mpg!!!

Quote:
The S2000 has received much praise from critics and motoring journalists and has received favourable reviews from such publications as Car and Driver,[24] Car,[25] the Los Angeles Times, and Road & Track magazine. Among the features highlighted are the high output of the engine, the high redline, the balanced handling, and the smooth gearbox. User surveys have named the S2000 as a favorite for overall customer satisfaction.[26][27]

* The S2000 was on Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004.
* The S2000 was the highest-ranked model in the J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study "Premium Sports Car" class for 2004,[28] 2006,[29] and 2008[30] and has consistently held one of the top three positions.
* The F20C engine won the International Engine of the Year award in the "1.8 to 2 litre" size category for five years from 2000 through 2004.
* The F20C was featured on Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2000 and 2001.
* The S2000 ranked number #1 in the BBC Top Gear Survey in 2004, 2005, and 2006.[31]
* Consumers' Most Wanted Convertible Under $35,000 for 2007, Edmunds.com[32]
* Ten Most Gorgeous Japanese Cars Currently For Sale, Jalopnik[33]
* Best Affordable Sports Car for 2008, U.S. News & World Report[34]
get an ap2, you can get round 35 mpg highway, can you believe it???

completely worth it, don't think about it any longer lol

Yeah....and deal with the Snap Oversteer the S2000 is notorious for. Have you ever seen the S2000s at autocross events...It's a spinfest. Get the car that started it all. Who knows maybe ina few years you can get collector car insurance on it and pay 600 dollars a year in insurance. Parts for the miata are a lot cheaper and more plentiful.

Either an S2000 or Miata are great convertible choices.

Although I like the Mini convertible, they're expensive little buggers. I think you get more for your money with a Miata or the S2000. Just my two cents.

Enjoy the "German Quality" of a car made in Britain.

Honestly, I don't know what their track record is, but anything made by BMW does not have cheap parts.

Forget the Mini - unreliable germn engineering. Forget the S2000 500 lbs heavier than your Yaris spoils the fun. Look at the MR2 Spyder and the Miata, I am torn between which one to get. You can by a 95 Miata for $3k add 3$ for a turbo and $1500 for a suspension and have and absolute road killer that is OBDI semi emmsisions legal), but it doesn;t look as nice as the Spyder. The olnly was to make the Spyder fast and emmissions legal is a 2ZZ swap which sets you back $7k, bu yo probably don't need the extra pwer with that car anyhow.

But forget te mini, I'ved owned 6 german cars, everyone spent at least a month in the shop a year (cummulative.)I had a 6 series BMW that drove like a dream but the repair bills doing my own work were astronomical.
