head rebuild

I am rebuilding the head on my 2008 yaris sedan.All new parts. ran into a problem with parts store when I asked them what the stock size measurement is for the lifter as it came from the factory. 35 different sizes?Any ideas. Factory repair manual does not contain info.

Look at page 14 of the Engine Mechanical section of the service manual for instructions on how to calculate the correct lifter thickness.

are you telling me a brand new engine contains differing sizes of lifters. this info would really help.

Yes. Each one can vary, as there is no other adjustment mechanism. If you read that section of the manual, you are supposed to remove and measure the existing ones, so you know what to put back in on an existing engine.

valve clearance is in spec, mpg over 40 mpg,experiencing serious noises associated with valve train for past 20000 mi, head must come off. since the labor is $1800 to take apart the head, I sense the need to replace mor than 1 part. I am afraid I have a lemon head or Chinese steel. all new parts around $1500. good insurance as not to pay another 1800 or worse.

If you are interested I have a spare head with valvetrain in it. Would give you a really good deal just to have it used rather than collecting dust. PM me if interested.
