Water pump

Hello everyone. I own a 2008 Toyota Yaris that has about 35,000 (i don't drive much actually). I recently had my regular oil change at the Toyota service place, where i have done all my car's maintenance services. They told me the water pump had began to leak and said it should be replaced soon. The cost would be around $500. I have never had any problems with the car, I have kept up with all its maintenance at the dealership and this is the first time that something defective comes up. I find it very expensive and also wonder if a car with this low mileage should have a problem like this. I am calling other places to see what they can offer but I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions from anyone here. Thanks!

were you shown evidence of the leak? search the forums here for pictures of what a failing pump looks like; theres a pink streak on the underside of the hood

The waterpump failing early is nothing new in the yaris community. $500 is an insane price water pumps can be bought for less than $50 and the coolant $25 and maybe an 1.5hr labour

Good to know it's nothing new. I knew it was too much $$... yikes. Thank you, kou!

It's supposedly one common items that failes fairly consistently on a Yaris. The part itself is only about 130$ from the dealer, and maybe 50$ from Autozone.
It should be possible to do the repair for someone with average amateur skills in repair. Plenty of do it yourself guides.

My 2007s water pump failed at around 13,000 miles.
Had the pink streak across the inside hood.
Was a warranty repair for me.

Common problem.

Get a few estimates from other shops.

Good luck and tell us what happens!

PS dont even THINK about giving up on the Yaris because of this problem! It has many more trouble free miles in it.

PPS If you ARE going to sell it PM me first!
