Speed sensor fault?
I have just put my old 2002 Yaris 1L GS back on the road for my daughter. It has been off the road for 6 months and now the speedo has stopped working. It displays 0 mph all the time. Had always worked fine before.
Could this be due to a faulty speedo sensor, if so where is it ? Thanks, Dan. |

It could be the speed sensor (which is a small device mounted to the top of the tranny), or it could be the speedometer itself. Plugging in an OBDII test tool would let you see if the ECM is getting the signal from the sensor, and if so, then the problem is the speedometer, rather than the sensor.

Thanks for the advice. Will see if I can get hold of an OBDII test tool off ebay and take it from there.

Just make sure that you verify compatibility of the device with your car. I am not 100% sure about which protocol your vintage of Yaris supports.

Just noticed ODO has not been going up and after resetting average mpg / speed counters they are not working ether. Before I spend money on a tool does this mean anything?

I've got a couple of spare speed sensors, but I would need more details about your car to verify the part numbers. Specifically, what gearbox and frame number?

That makes it more likely to be the speed sensor itself.

Thanks for your help but I fixed it with a slap. The whole display turned off while driving, so I gave it a slap an it all came back on including the speedo, it worked for a few minutes and stopped again. When i got home i took the cover off the dash and found a loose plug pushing it in securely and it's now all working. :-)
