California legal Supercharger or Turbo?

Is there a supercharger or turbo kit that is legal in California yet?

...Or do you have to install and remove when its smog check time?

There are no aftermarket parts related to intake and exhaust that are legal in California. No CAI,no header, no exhaust, no FI... It sucks, I know, but from what I've seen so far, nobody seems to really mind, unless you do something stupid. Such as street racing or otherwise get yourself in trouble.

Is it legal to register your car out of state to avoid the smog test? Then you can have all the engine modifications.

No, it is not legal, although I've read articles in the local newspaper that people do it. Mainly for tax and registration fee reasons I believe. If you live in CA, you need a CA driving license and CA registration. Theoretically, you should do that within 10 days of moving, if I remember correctly.

Definitley something you can pull-off fairly easily, but if you have an accident, you might get left holding the bag by your insurance, as its basically a form of fraud.

Be sure you don't claim a different state to your insurance agent/company, since they can totally deny your claims. As far as the state goes, they are unlikely to ever do anything more than fine you or give you a ticket if you caught via an accident or a pissy traffic cop.

1. The Yaris doesn't need smog testing for five years.

2. When the time comes, there are two tests. VISUAL, which many smog stations don't care about and EMISSIONS, which with the supercharger set to 'off' will certainly pass your car (assuming you have kept your stock cats).

Just because the laws exist it doesn't mean they are strictly enforced You should see some of the crazy stuff people do to their cars around here. Last weekend, driving back from LA I was behind this pick-up truck with a center exhaust pipe so big, I could have stuck my head in it, no kidding. CA license plate.

I always found it strange that most all of the aftermarket auto part creators and distributors are based in Cali but folks there cannot legally use the products so readily available to them. "intended for off-road us only"
