DIY Hood Gas Spring
For the DIY'er that wants to save a buck and doesn't want to drill holes in his Yaris when installing a hood gas cylinder....here's a solution:
Tools needed for installation: 1/2" open or box end wrench 12 mm socket 14 mm socket ratchet w/extension Purchased items from MSC Industrial Supply (online): MSC #: 00483743----------------$15.43----- 30# cyl w 7" stroke MSC #: 32912198---2@.72-----$1.44------- ball stud MSC #: 32912206---2@.24-----$0.48 -------retainer clip total---------------------------------$17.35 Misc. items: 5/16" nut....2 req'd 5/16" lock washers....4 req'd Fabricated items: (see pics for clarification) upper bracket.............1" angle aproximately 3" long with 2 holes (5/16" and 7/16" diameter) lower bracket............1/4" X 1" X 9" steel, with 2 holes (5/16" and 7/16" diameter) the 1st one 6" from the bend and the 2nd 1.5" from the bend. NOTE: Cylinder is positioned wrong in most of these pic's. The shaft always attaches to the lower bracket while the cylinder (black) attaches to the top bracket.

Looks great. Nice job. The strut is upside down. Struts are filled with oil which is located in the black section. This same oil is used to lubricate the silver shaft. The position you have placed the strut, this cannot be achieved due to gravitational constraints.

Since I can't fabricate from aluminum parts and I'm pretty sure about others in the same situation, why don't you fabricate and sell to us?

These ar just steel painted to show up better, aluminum could be done but may need to be heavier material. PM's with questions are welcome.

Maybe a DIY kit? Since you're comfortable buying from that company maybe you should buy a bunch of the required products and then charge us for the kit and/or shipping? If you do, be sure to post something in the Classifieds section ^^

He would have to become a supporting vendor of Yarisworld first and pay a fee, same reason my Group buy was shut down

Support your board!! This is an amazing free resource!
If churp has to pay a fee to become a sponsor, then that can hopefully recovered by raising the price a few bucks. Isn't life so much fairer for all when we play by the rules!

Lets not bitch about vendor fee's, when the owners will give you a one month fee of $35 to push your product.
PM the owners here for a list of vendor fee's. |

I don't think Churp has any interest in becoming a vendor anyway. I think he just made a DIY. I have to be careful about joking around here. I forget sometimes. Jezuz Krizt.
