Sugary soft drink linked to pancreas cancer.

People who drink two or more sweetened soft drinks per week have a much higher risk of cancer.

The assumption MAY be flawed because of a basic principle that states: correlation does not imply causation. In other words, just because A and B occur together it doesn't mean that A causes B or vice versa. Maybe some other factor, C causes both...

Maybe people who don't drink much soda eat healthier as well, maybe they exercise more, etc so overall, they may have a healthier metabolism... Who knows? Statistics are a complicated science...

On average I drink more than one can of soda per day, so yeah I think about pancreatic cancer sometimes... even with an 87% higher chance, that means the risk increases from say 1 in 9,000 people to 1 in 5,000 or so people... I wonder what my risk is of getting into a severe car accident tomorrow on my way to work. I bet it's worse than 1 in 5,000

I also love chocolate and eat quite a lot of it... dang, my pancreas' days must be numbered

Yeah I'd be more worried about the pancreas overloading and eventually submitting to Diabetes than becoming cancerous.

You still end up with the basic statement being true - the higher risk is there, but may, as you say, not be DUE to the sweetened drinks.
In the same way as "driving a car will heighten your chances of having a car accident". In fact, your chances are almost as high if you are the passenger, so the act of driving is not in itself the cause, just an indicator of risk.
BTW - Statistics (capital "S") IS a science, but statistics (small "S") ARE known to be hard to interpret...

Everything except clean air and water causes cancer, what else is new.

death isn't the end, it's the beginning. but if you're worried, get the cell phone away from your head and this lap top off your lap and drink nothing but water that was distilled.

Actually that's not such a good idea. Have you heard of water poisoning? That happens when you drink too much water and end up washing away the electrolytes from your body. There was a water poisoning related death in California a while ago, after a radio show offered a prize to whomever drinks most water for the duration of the show. The lady that was in second place died a few hours after the show, if I remember correctly.

Edit: there it is: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/...n2369761.shtml

So why isn't distilled water good? Because it's distilled, so all the minerals have been removed from it. So if the water doesn't have minerals, instead of giving them to you, it will take them from you, so no, I would never drink distilled water.

I would at the very least dissolve some table salt into it, if I really had nothing else to drink but distilled water

That'll never be forgotten. Maybe now some of these annoying jackass radio hosts will think a little before broadcasting a dare...
