DIY: Braille Battery install

So you bought this fancy, weight reducing, yet powerful battery and now you wonder, how do you install it? Well, if you bought the battery with the mounting kit, then you're in luck. If not, then maybe you can get an idea from my DIY.

TOOLS:
- 10 mm wrench
- 4 mm allen
- 5 mm allen
- Phillips screw driver
- measuring tape
- bottle of beer (preferably New Castle or Blue Moon)

The Prelude:

This is under the assumption that you have bought the mount kit AND should already know how to assemble it. Now...grab that 10 mm wrench and take off the battery cables and the battery tie down doo-hickey

Grab the plastic battery tray and take a good look at the bottom plate

The holes that are identified are where the mounting screws are going to go through

The MAIN course:

There are two methods to this. If you have a good eye, you can drill the holes that correspond with the mounting points simply by looking at the bottom of the tray, as there are indention that you can use as markers.

The OTHER method involves getting your measuring tape. The FIRST hole measures at 4cm x 15cm. BUT MAKE SURE that the arrow of the battery tray is facing you as seen in the images.

The second hole measures roughly 9cm x 7cm.

Almost done:

The two holes should measure about 9.5cm from each other. You get the mounting base and two self tapping screws and attach the base to the battery tray.

Place the battery in the mounting plate

Attach the other washers and screws...

Once done, place the complete battery and all onto the bottom plate. The mounting screws should align with the identified holes. Attach the cables and viola! IF you want some extra security, you COULD attach some nuts to the underside of the bottom plate to secure the battery.

Once all is done, grab that bottle of beer and stare at the awe of your accomplishment. I hope this helps. I still don't have a fool-proof idea for the hood rod. But if I come up with something, y'all be the first to know.

Why thank-you my good man. I don't really drink much so figured that i'd drink the best whenever I do.

as far as the battery. I do like it. I still think my cold cranks are faster due to the new battery. Besides, a small battery for a small car? Brilliant! This should be the standard for all compact daily drivers.

Great "how to" pics but i dont understand why you would go to all that trouble just to put in a different battery

This is the 11lb, B14115, Braille from NST! This battery is about 25lbs lighter than the OEM battery and should work for 99% of Yaris owners out there.

You may also be able to get away with the 9lb if you don't plan on doing any stereo mods, and live in a warm weather state such as CA, TX, or FL year round.

Well, in terms for regular people like you and me. Its a mod for people that are really serious about weight reduction. The same people that put in NST pulleys to increase RPM and fuel efficiency, that install short-shifters to decrease lag time in between gears, that get rid of the spare tire and rear seat in order to reduce weight. I am sure that reducing 20lb by simply replacing a battery could have a positive effect when combine with other fuel saving techniques.

Is it for everyone? I don't know, probably not. Could you benefit from it? I believe so.

I plan to do this mod but only after its time to replace my original battery. Just like how i plan to get rims after its time to replace my factory tires. I dont want to waste what is already good until its time to change. It helps justify the cost. A normal decent battery cost close to 100 so little more you get a better one.

"All that work"? Are you kidding? Not to take anything away from what he's done here, but he drilled 2 holes, screwed in the bracket and just reconnected the battery. That's like....As easy as it gets.

Anyway, cool writeup and good pics, nice work!
