Help Me Understand My New Electric Meter!
The electric company replaced my perfectly good mechanically indicating electric meter with a digital readout one.
The new one, as far as I can tell, lacks the function of the spinning wheel to tell you how much electricity you are using. All it does it read 88888888 for 15 seconds then it reads how many kilowatt hours since the meter was installed for another 15 seconds then it goes back to 88888888. How does one read these newfangled contraptions? Thanks!

Below the left hand side of the numbers is a dashed line. The more dashes, the more electricity you are using. Our meters send a signal the our electricity company once an hour to tell them how much electricity has been used. No need to have someone come around and read the meter anymore. It also tells the electricity company if there is a power outage at your home. Probably tells them other things. I can look up how many kilowatt hours I use everyday and how much it costs by going into my account at the electricity company.

Thanks I'll see if my power company has the on line feature.
I keep track of the meter once a week and have my gas/electric bill down to ~$35 a week in fall/winter/spring.

Bronsin, You probably have what is referred to as a Smart Meter. My house, completed in 2008, didn't have one initially. At some point since, the powers that be replaced the previous meter with a Smart Meter. I think it is an invasion of privacy {and know others who feel the same way), but we had no choice in the matter.

HA invasion of privacy.
The other day I found out my local library keeps a record of every book Ive read for the past 7 years. The list can be clicked on in my online library account which I use to order books I want to read and also keep track of what Ive borrowed. But good news you can delete and opt out of the list! We'll see if it stays deleted/opted out.

Here in NJ a kilowatt hour is 15 cents. 76 kwh this week (using ac now) so about 10 bucks.

Here where I am in BC, BC Hydro charges you 17.64 cents per day to connect to the electrical grid then 7.97 cents per kW.h for the first 1350 kW.hs in a 60 day period. If you use more than that in 60 day period then the rate is 11.95 cents per kW.h for all kW.h over that amount. If the billing period is more or less than 60 days, they prorate the number of kW.h in the lower rate. Then we pay 5% sales tax on top of that.

In BC you can keep your old analog meter but you have to pay an extra $20? or $25? a month to have someone come a read it.

I had a visit from someone from the town who wanted to install a new telemetric water meter in my basement so he wouldn't have to read it (No ones ever come in the house to read it) I showed him where the wm was and that it was in a very confined spot within 6 inches of the 65 year old fuel line that goes to the 550 gallon underground tank that holds the fuel oil that heats our house. Damage that fuel line and all that oils gonna leak into the basement and destroy the house. For which he'd be responsible. He appraised the situation and backed off. But I sure hope he's not charging me $500 a year to read it!

I have a problem that I haven't been able to fix for years now. I go to p in the toilet, and just when I'm about to finish, I flush. Problem is, I end up having some reserve urine coming from somewhere and the toilet ends up flushing before I finish p-ing. Forcing me to wait for the tank to fill up so I can flush again to avoid an argument with the Mrs. about non-flushed p. Anyway, why dafuk can't I wait until every drop is out before flushing?
