Intake VS modified filter housing
so, has anyone that opened up their factory intake box (removed the little tube on the end of it, then cut at least a 3"x5" hole in the front of it facing the cold air) noticed any power differance or even sound change when switching to a full on intake?
I was just wondering, because I just cut a large hole in the front of the air box (cut the whole front of it off leaving only 1" on the top and sides), and even with the factory air filter, it sounds like it has a intake, and seems to have slightly more power. I was wondering if anyone has done this to their intake box, then switched over to a cone filter and 2"+ intake tube, noticed any major power or sound differance?

I just switched my air filter to a cone filter from Blitz and even though my friend keeps telling me that all my gains are "all in my head" when you punch the gas it's more responsive and accelerates a bit faster than with the stock box. that's just my two cents. and it sounds a bit like a g35/350z at high rpms hehe

by switched to a cone filter do you mean you put a cone airfilter on and had a factory airbox installed? Or did you go from a gutted airbox like mine to a intake?

Funny you brought this up...I was detailing the engine bay yesterday and saw that fagel little hose coming off the airbox. Removing that alone did have it sounding a bit like it had an intake at higher rpms. More responsive as well!

Sex or Handjob?
Diarrhea or Sirloin Steak? C'mon people... there is no replacement for the real thing. I should know... I've had both! I have my hacked airbox on now and trust me, I MISS MY INTAKE! |

ttt I agree with you Chino but I'm happy with what i have now. An intake might be for me later on after the cops stop being dicks around my area....

Yea. REALLY SUCKS. People from the San Mateo HIN on March 10 got they car pull over just for things like front white turn signal lights!!!!!! one guy got his car taken n stripped by the cops cuz they "thought" it was stolen since it had been in the shop for 1.5 years and the vin numbers were moved.
And I don't even think my air filter is CARB legal.

An open box with a K&N made a big difference in both sound and power. Heres the link for the DIY.

hrm, well, I dont plan on putting a intake on untill my car needs it(ie, after it has something done to it besides exhaust),untill then I am not going to hassle myself with CEL's and the other joys that come with intakes and other performance mods.
thanks for the replies guys! P.S. I know what you mean d2dailly...I haven't had my stereo on since I hacked the airbox...been buzzing around town, slowing down till the car is at about 2500 rpms then dumping it and accelerating 'till the car is at 4000rpms...thats where that lovely sounding sweet spot is...sucks for gas milage but boy does it sound nice.

I removes the air filter and the elbow that comes out of the air filter box and I run it like that and you notice some difference in the rpm specially from 3500 up

yes, opening the air box by hacking a hole in it does more for the sound and performance than just taking off the silencer tube.
what I am wondering is, how much of a gain do people feel on the "Butt Dyno" (the seat of your pants "does this feel faster" dynomometer), and if it is that big of a differance...because opening the airbox sounds like a intake at about 2K+ RPMs, and seems to have a reasonable HP gain. I am just wondering if anyone went from the hacked box to a true intake.

I went from the hacked box to a messy intake and now I'm back on the hacked box waiting on a clean intake, so I'll tell y'all in a week or so if there is a difference.
