Disable Airbag?

Hello,

Just wondering, is it possible to disable the airbag deployment in for the passenger / driver. In case we need to put in a baby seat or for any emergency?

Would appreciate how to if possible.

Look in your owners manual.

I believe there is a switch designed to do just that.

The Yaris doesn't have a switch as some vehicles do. MicroImage sells a device that I developed that allows you to arm or disarm the passenger airbag. I developed it for people running aftermarket seats, but it would work for this purpose as well:

Mine has the switch (you operate it with the key) for the passenger seat as standard (IMHO all EU market Yarii do). If you're in doubt, just open the passenger door and look at the side of the dash that goes against the door trim. I found a pic, it's right below the warning sticker.

I just checked the Japanese EWDs. Your car does not have a switch and it does have the weight sensors under the passenger seat with the occupant classification ECU mounted under the front edge of the passenger seat (like the US ones do).

Unfortunately the occupant classification ECU has a different connector than the one on the US Yaris do, so the MicroImage module would not work with your car.

What's EWD? Pls forgive my ignorance So that means there's no way to disable the airbags in the Jap models??

EWD = Electrical Wiring Diagrams.

Correct, at this point there is not really a way to disable it on your car.

So...you cant disable the passanger airbag when installing a child seat in the passangter seat?

With all the flap about kids getting killed by airbags it would seem Mother Toyota would have something for that?

Indeed - She has a disclaimer in the owners manual, which says that car seats are to be installed in the rear seat. Also, the occupant classification system prevents the airbag from deploying if the passenger weighs too little.
