exhaust gasket

This is an easy fix to a potential costly one. The manifold to exhaust pipe bolts are usually, severely rusted. I used PB Blaster, heat, a 120 psi impact tool and the bolts did not budge and thankfully, they did not break which would have been a headache.

SOLUTION: with a large thick screwdriver spread the flanges apart to maximum and place anything thick enough to maintain the space. Use long hemostats or something that can remove the old gasket material. Purchase high temp exhaust rope, braided is better than twisted, they are available in 1000 and 1800 degree temperature ratings, some hardware stores carry them in 1/4 and 1/2 inch diameters. Thread rope around pipe tightly several times, cut and remove device that maintained the opening, the flanges will close perfectly and no more noise.

TIME: 15 minute job.

COST: 6.59 before taxes

Exhaust stainless nuts bolts gasket

On Tercel and Corrolla I used, from hardware store, 3/8 stainless nuts/bolts on all the exhaust system flanges. (9/16" or 14mmwrench or 6 point sockets fine for nut and bolt.) Stainless washers are fine too.

(People use tools including hacksaw blades; air chisel; hammer and chisel; and torch to remove the badly rusted fasteners.)

If you can get the nut cherry red it'll come out like it was lubbed.

This.

Heat gun will not achieve anything close. Butane+o2 torche to get it red, and a ratchet will do the trick.

No need of air impact.
