How long does the battery in the remote last?

In April, I'll have my Yaris for three years. I'm wondering how long the battery in the remote will last. I drive my car everyday and use the remote to unlock and lock the car. I'm thinking it's time to change the battery.

You should have at least another 5 yrs on that battery.

Remotes have been known to wear out long before the battery is dead.

My Talon's remote chewed threw a pair of batteries each year.
My Yaris is now 21 months old and so far all is good.

Well, maybe not to you, but I've seen a lot of remotes killed in less than 5 years. Some brands are flimsier than others,and some people press the buttons really hard when they are out of range. Remember too, that some people's keychains are treated like indestructable objects, being dropped and thrown constantly.

Not that a remote shouldn't last 15 years, but I can understand why some don't.

Batteries are bad for the environment...don't replace the battery until you start having problems unlocking your car at medium to long range distances. If you're really scared the bat will just not work one day... learn about the vallet button, or work around for your unit. I know aftermarket alarms have vallet functions... would hope an oem would too. The alarm I had on my mazda (aftermarket - audiovox) would last for 2-3 years. My current alarm (aftermarket-autopage) is 2 years old now, and still going strong.

Besides you, who says the remote's last more than 15 years? Toyota?

I have never had to replace the batteries in any remotes that I have used, which is 4. But out of the 4 remotes I have owned 2 of them stopped working completely. The other 2 I still own and are working for now. Therefore I'm with the guy that says the battery will out last the remote. Unless you put your remote in a padded box after using it, it will evetually stop working. Remotes get bumped around while they are hanging in your ignition not to mention in pockets, purses, etc.

uhhhh... if you didn't replace the battery, how do you know the battery didn't die?

I took the battery out of the remote that was not working and put in into the extra remote and it powered the extra remote. Thats how.

I never had to replace a remote battery either.
However, my remotes do take a beating being on my key rings and with frequent usage.

I personally never has a remote wear out but, believe those who say theirs did before the battery crapped out.

BTW, I have a remote battery for my Celica that is well over 8 years old and still going strong but, the remote has definately seen better days..

I have a working 15 year old, 2 working 11 year old, and 2 working 2 month old. all toyota.

never had an issue except battery replacement

wow thats great. The remote for my 05 Taco stopped working within the first 6 months. Maybe they don't make em as good as they use to....or maybe you take yours off the key chain and put it inside a padded box inside of a gun case the first day you own the car.
