Canadian Government went one better than a sticker it gave everyone over the past couple of years a $1000 cheque for buying an eco friendly car.

$1000 for the Yaris. And the hybrids got considerably more rebated.

<rant, you've been warned>

This thing where gov'ts are giving credit for a car because it is a hybrid is bothersome to me. If I were to buy an Escalade hybrid, I could get a tax break. Instead, I buy a car that offsets THREE of those behemoths and get...ziltch. It is further amazing as the programs seem to think that the not so small environmental impacts of those battery...um...batteries (I don't think Pack really invokes the correct image) are negligible.
It seems more about political correctness and LOOKING like they are doing something than actually promoting energy saving technologies, like more efficient versions of existing petrol and diesel engines.

My commute time is usually cut in half only when I'm carpooling. The sticker would let me do this even when I'm alone.

But this is the US, so for the last 30+ years people have only focused on the American "living large" lifestyle, which means luxury cars and big clumsy pick-ups and SUVs with only the purpose of commuting and looking good doing it.

Now that it's biting us in the ass, we should be redirecting our attention to the use of only smaller, more efficient cars for our basic transportation needs, like the Europeans do. Luxury means nothing at this point, and I'll be happy to take these big expensive cars off people's hands

Completely agreed. What they should look at is emissions AND the epa estimated mpg. After all, lower emissions does not necessarily equal cleaner air when the hybrid suv's using 100 gallons in a trip that could be done with 20 gallons in a smaller non-hybrid vehicle.
