Thanks to Jeff, I have a bunch of FR-S guys dropping by these days, which is awesome.
so what you are saying, is that you are glad you got an FR-S and not a Fiat.

Looks like your engine grew a tumor. You should take it off and give it to me to dispose of

I wouldn't buy a knock off. Go with something proven, that someone actually took the time to make sure actually makes power.

hello, i have a question. i was at auto zone yesterday and bought a filter and necessary tubing for installing it. as i got done carefully putting everything together, making sure everything was connected and in place, i tried to start my car but it would die right after, just struggle for a few seconds and then just die. i tried different things like changing the tubing or covering parts of the filter to let less air through but with the same results. at one point i got it so that the car would idle fine, but when i pushed on the accelerator it would die after reaching higher rpms. i finally gave up, put the original parts back on and returned the new ones to the store, so no financial harm was experienced luckily. now everything's working fine, which makes me think the problem wasn't an improperly connected or damaged MAF sensor. does anyone know what my problem is? does the exhaust have to be replaced to assure the extra air entering the engine has a larger pipe to exit? i have no idea.
i appreciate the help and talk to you soon

Welcome to the forum, tobs,

I'm glad your car worked fine after going back go the stock filter. What kind of filter did you get from Auto Zone? Did you disconnect the negative terminal from your battery so that when you reconnected, it your computer would relearn the new operating parameters created by the new filter?

I've looked at off-the-shelf parts and it's almost all 2.5" or bigger. If you used a larger section where the MAF goes, that messes up the air velocity, which makes the ECU think it's not pulling in enough air. That said, I think it would have thrown an error code if there was something really screwy with it.

Probably had the maf in backwards

Dont half ass shit on your car if you dont know what your doing. Buy an engineered intake system from Garm and get real, SAFE results that wont fuck up your car. $1000 motor or trying to save $50 with autozone crap

Maybe... It's always a good idea to take off the negative cable to let the ECU reset itself whenever you make any changes to your engine. Then it will start fresh and learn to adapt to the new operating conditions.

late chime in - but I own one of those ebay intakes (came with the white yaris when I bought it). it's identical to the AEM, but probably built with less quality in mind. I broke the weld on mine for the mount - likely due to the fact that mine is bolted directly to the frame with no rubber spacer. apparently the engine moves a lot :p

^ yes, it does move quite a bit (unless you purchase our TRD trans mount/roll stopper). Make sure that the cold air intake you choose has the ability to move via rubber bushings/stoppers or other means. Short ram is a little more forgiving in that respect.

yeah man the maf was good, no half assing here. i don't see what's wrong with making cheap crap work, and if what we're talking about is a 5hp increase i don't see the point in spending hundreds of dollars on it. also, as long as the filter prevents stuff from entering the engine i don't see how it could compromise it. in the end it's a tube with a filter, there's only so much engineering you can do to that

The only limitation on that the tube diameter is 2 1/8th inches inside diameter at the MAF sensor. Everthing else is up for grabs. My truck intake is swedged down in the only place it matters, at the MAF sensor.

Thanks for the good deal Garm... it works great!
