Changing LED's In Projector Head Lights

a year ago i picked up the projector head lights from depo auto. then a few months after i had them i hit a deer and the body shop replaced ONLY the passenger side head light. and they replaced it with a head light from depo that had white/halogen leds int the halos, and my driver side still had blue leds in the halos.

this has bothered the shit out of me. and i emailed depo several times to see if i could order just the passenger side head light with blue leds, andfor whatever reason, i dont know if it was me not following up on the issue or if it was depos fault, this didnt get sorted out the way it should have.

so i just emailed them again about it trying to get another blue one.

but if it doesnt work out i'm considering changing the leds myself but instead of blue i want to change them to red.

never done this before i'm sure it will involve soldering where the leds are inside the halos. not sure about the rest of the work or how to open the head lights but i'm sure it wouldnt be too difficult.

any insight please?

Been there. Baking the headlights is easy (250 degrees in the oven for about 10 minutes). They actually come apart easier than the stock ones. As for the LED's, if you are referring to the halo ones, you don't need to bake the headlights to get those out. Just take the outer wiring apart from the housing and you will see that the halo LED's are easy to pull out. Once you have them out, go to Radio Shack and pick up a set of replacement LED's. They have them in all colors. Match the size as best you can and solder the new LED's in place of the old ones. It's a bit tricky at first, but with some patience it's not hard at all. I jerry-rigged a flashlight to test the new LED's to make sure I knew + and -. As for the 3 upper LED's in each light, those are a different story since they are a completely different LED set-up. I checked everywhere on eBay to get replacements and they are damn near impossible to locate.

as in, they have similar replacements, but they aren't quite the same and all of them come from Hong Kong, so it's a crapshoot until you actually receive them. They have a wedge type housing design and none of the eBay ones look the same as the stockers.

Just a note, Whooppee. Don't drive in VA with the blue LEDs on, the cops will pull you for that. Not sure about Maryland.

i just printed out MD laws regarding colored lights and they prohibit blue and or red lights.

so technically i should have been pulled over for the blue ones.

BUT

what about the new mercedes and audis that have the exact same blue colored leds built in from the factory?

another member said as long as the red or blue lights r low powered and not the actual headlights its legal. right id like to explain that to a cop.

Cops in VA will pull you over for just about anything. PA cops are almost as bad.

What about the Halos? My right halos are not working well, It's like the led was moved from they should be, you can see them on but they are not really bright like the left side. Do I have to open the headlights to fit this?

Legato, search "code of virginia" in google. Then 46.2-1020, last paragraph. They could also hit you with 46.2-1030 section B.

On an iPod now, so I can't cut and paste the links for you.

if u take the house off the car and flip it over.. there are 2 circular grommets.. with the white and black halo wires coming out of um... pull that out and u should see the LED and if u look inside u should see where its sopost to sit..if it does not get as bad as it says it will weatherwise ill try to get pics tomorrow.. i also gotta take pics of the radio and ac control trim for someone else.. 2 birds with one stone
