My friend got one and I got to drive it around. It is fun, but I personally hate the way it looks. Still fun to drive. All i need is a turbo to match the performance of that little rocket

A 2012 Yaris base model 2 door 5 speed manual weighs 2,295 lbs.

The engine is factory rated at 106hp at the output shaft.

Which yields .046hp/lb.

This is the benchmark by which we can accurately compare other cars, simply by knowing their weight and horsepower.

Compare our Yaris benchmark to Rigaud's 1750lbs and 95 h.p. Honda Civic.

.054hp/lb.

The Honda has a 17% better power/weight ratio than the Yaris.

Illusionx's 1900lb 96hp Suzuki Swift

.051hp/lb.

Or a 10% better power to weight ratio.

A 2012 Fiat base model 2 door weighs 2,363lbs. and 101hp.

For .042hp/lb.

Or 9% worse power to weight ratio.

It's a fun game to play.

I will take the extra weight of todays cars. those sub 2000 lb cars were not very safe. fun, sure, but im glad I never got in a serious accident with my 89 civic or I may not be here typing this...or I would be doing so with one of those mouth controlled devices.

Well, a turbo, an LSD, bigger brakes, faster steering rack ... but who's counting?

Sorry, I was thinking 2008 (the year in the title of your recent tire thread) . Wow, 30k. They must have only had heavily optioned ones with additional PAC stickers in your area (similar to what many Toyota dealers in Bronsin's neck of the woods have done re the Yaris). I remember the CR-Z (here) being in a similar (but narrower) range to the Prius c. According to Motor Trend now (a few years down the road) for 2014 the MSRP range (which I imagine wouldn't include destination, title, tax, and dealer installed options) is $19,080 - 23,360 for the Prius c, and $20,645 - $23,990 for the CR-Z. I like Hondas, but I wouldn't pay 30k for a Honda (unless I could find an NSX for much less than what it is worth, drive it for a bit, and then sell it and make a profit).

I agree. The Veloster is 6 inches longer, but Hyundai utilizes that extra space well. I also don't like the dash in the CR-Z that much, and I do like the dash in the Veloster. The manual base Veloster is also lighter than the manual CR-Z.

i think this is the biggest factor. FUN. i mean, we all know that power-to-weight ratio plays an important role in this, but IMHO if it's not on the "underpowered" side, great company R&D (research and development) will get you gear ratios that will make the car fun to drive.

with this, a 2012 corolla weighs 2700+ lbs, with 122hp for 1.6L giving 0.044 hp/lb (my yaris is even less@1.3L, only 0.037 hp/lb), despite this it was sluggish and there was no fun factor at all. the handling felt like driving a small pickup truck. comfortable, just not fun.

Lets just say there is also an Abarth that come to our autocross events in stc class. He doesn't come close to my raw times.

I will still take a yaris over a Abarth any day

in what ways do you mean? the starlet was rwd, so it doesn't count. it is heavier than the tercel, paseo, echo, etc. gets worse gas mileage than all of those as well.

I always thought Starlets were cool little cars... the essence of cheap simple basic frugal transportation.

It had a 1 liter engine that made 44 horsepower and the 2 door 4 speed manual transmission base model weighed 1,620 lbs.

That comes to .027 hp/lb. or 60% of the Yaris .046hp/lb.

...but the gas mileage rating was 38/52 ! Yikes!

well, that was before a revised epa cycle in the late 80's, then of course a more heavily revised epa protocol for 2008. so, that 38/52 would be much lower under todays testing cycle.

of course, nobody can make a car that light today....or that unsafe.

Safe schmafe. Don't get in an accident and theres no problem!

LOVE the Starlet! Just imagine how good the mpg would be with a modern engine!

I think the 75 Rabbit was 1750 lbs also.

That's what I want. Light car tiny engine. Also the ergos of a 2 door Yaris/ECHO.

my favorite car ever was a olive green 1979 vw rabbit.

too bad being the best driver in the world isn't enough anymore, as there are soooo many awful, awful drivers on the road in heavier and heavier vehicles.

would I buy a manual 1.2 liter diesel engine yaris (or 1.3 liter multijet diesel 500) that weighed 1900 lbs and got 50 mpg? heck yeah I would....but I would be more attentive than I have ever been before.

I totally agree.
Yaris' don't fare all that well in crash tests either. I drive by three basic rules:

Don't be in a hurry.
Don't be angry.
Don't daydream.

There are two other rules that don't apply to me because I don't need or want a cell phone.

Don't yak.
Don't text.

Yes... or with front wheel drive. That engine got good mileage with a carburetor on it!

Here's a pic of the larger 1.3 engine...

I love cheap small underpowered economy cars. And a two door base model stick shift Yaris is as close to simple basic reliable frugal transportation as we can get today...

...so that's what I have.

Probably the best of the 80's FWD but not super light at around 2200lbs but with 175hp the Dodge Omni GLHS is to me is the first real hot hatch ever. I had one for a couple of years with a built motor with around 325whp.

Sounds like you're a better driver!

Don't get me wrong, I still love my Yaris, and would totally rock a new Yaris SE. I love how lightweight and tossable they are. But in the hands of a capable driver, the Abarth will wipe the floor with a stock Yaris. I know it's keyboard racing, but the specs really are in the Abarth's favor.
