2018 Yaris?

This is the 2017 Toyota Vitz. Will this be the 2018 Yaris here in the U.S.?

I think they are dropping the "yaris" and going with "im"

The iM is a Corolla hatch (aka Auris).

Sadly, I would be surprised if they didn't drop the Toyota-made Yaris, and just go with the iA (Mazda) Yaris for the North American market. We will see. I wonder how long Toyota plans to run with the 2nd Gen Yaris underpinnings with incremental clever refreshes. If its not broke, don't try to fix it I guess, and it certainly saves them on R&D costs of creating a whole new model design - though snotty North American critics will crucify it for being 'recycled old tech' if it does make it over here (like they have been doing since around 2012). Toyota would have to update the transmission and pump-up the engine specs a bit (at the least) to escape their reviewer wrath.

Not a fan of the front/rear bumper black cutouts on the Yellow Yaris pictured. I like the tail-lights and hatch design better though.

I don't like the Corolla-like taillights or the Squidward nose up front.

I think Toyota just needs to update the interior with more soft-touch materials. One of the biggest complaints with the Yaris was all the hard plastic everywhere. They should also use a 6-speed automatic and manual now to try to help improve the mpg.

Probably right.

The front bumper and grille are hideous, and I just don't get the obsession with huge fake vents (front and rear) on so many of the new models. Stupid.

Nevertheless, I'd still buy one if it makes it over here. I can't deny I love the Vitz/Yaris!

Wow that front end is atrocious. The rear end not too bad.

It's time for a new engine or at least a 1nzfe 2.0 and yes a 6spd trans as well.
It wouldn't cost much if they just used a 6spd trans from another Toyota already using that trans. It is a great engine, but it is long over due for an update, how long has it been in use now?

I'm more than satisfied with the 1.5L and the 4-spd. automatic transmission.

I'm sure the SE version probably looks sexier than that yellow L pictured, but I would really have to opt for the black paint to hide/blend the atrocious black plastic cutouts on the front/back bumper (& the gaping front maw design looks worse than the current). Black paint on the current 2015 to 2017 design hides/blends the front to the point where you don't even notice it. Sometimes I wish I would have gone black instead of white, even with the heat out here.

the engine is fine. Cheap and reliable. I wouldn't mind if they added all the features like VVTLI etc to get more mpg, and a 6 speed manual and 8 speed auto, but really Toyota USA does not want to sell the Yaris, dealers don't want to sell the Yaris either.

I noticed that both the 2016 and 2017 were/are being stocked at the dealerships around here even less than in 2015, and they were pretty scarce in 2015. You are lucky to find one token L/LE Yaris on the lot at any dealership here now. Most have zero - but lots of Corolla's though.

Here in Australia the Yaris is being advertised on prime time TV. Its's maybe not as popular as the Corolla, but I see a lot of them about.

They are hugely popular overseas, they have been the number 1 selling car in Europe for a very long time. The problem is for some reason car companies are afraid to sell these cars with all the luxuries in the USA. They think people will not buy a Yaris if it is 20k even if it has all the luxuries of a Camry and Avalon. They are of course totally wrong, but that causes them to do stupid things.
