Poor MPG's
Hi fellas, Ive owned my 2013 Yaris SE Automatic for 2 months now and in the beginning I was doing alot of highway driving and the best mpg i got was 34mpg.
I am now driving in highway and city combined and the mpgs have dropped drastically to 25-26 mpg! I am highly disappointed and I am sure that I am driving on "D" and not 3rd gear. Any reccomendations? |

if your car is stock then it should be fine.... unless you floor it in the city or hwy.

Have you hit any curbs or pot holes lately? You alignment may have gone out of spec. Or you may just be accelerating too harshly off stop signs/lights. Also check your tire pressure to make sure they are not under inflated.

I noticed a different in my MPG's when I switched to premium.
That's just me though maybe?

Buying expensive premium gas won't help your mileage. The Yaris engine is made to run on 87 octane. Check the ethanol content at your gas station just to see if the mixture had been increased any. Ethanol doesn't yield as good mileage as dino gas. Take the cover off of your air filter and check for rodent nests. (not a joke) It does happen. Do a "gas mileage" search and read some of the economy tips. If it's not any of the obvious things like tire pressure, the average gas mileage reading on the computer will tell you exactly when your driving habits are going wrong.
My wife drives our 2012 Yaris the most. She is not economy minded and gets 35-37 mpg even with no freeway driving. |

Thanks for the replies, I drive the car with the A/C on and have hit many potholes while going to work since it is in Washington Dc, the pothole capital!
I drive the car normal as I did when I owned the 2008 Scion XB which has a 2.4 and with the same driving habits as of now i would get atleast 22-24mpg on that car, so i figured by getting this yaris I would definitely see in the mid 30's mpg but not really. Thanks for the input guys! |

Accelerate evenly and try to drive with the green ECO light on. I had to learn how to drive my 2012 Yaris for the optimum gas mileage after driving a Dodge Ram for 11 years. I get 39 to 40 mpg with the Yaris in the summer, 37-39 in the winter. The Dodge, using the same driving techniques I learned with the Yaris has increased from 12 mpg to 13.5 mpg

I have the opportunity to use non-ethanol gasoline in my Yaris. That may help my mileage figures somewhat, but unsure by how much. One thing I have noticed is that I obtain better MPGs with tire PSI at 37, thereabouts. I try to gauge my acceleration as per the ECO light, for the most part. Yes, I make lots of "friends" on the highways with my individual pace, but my mileage figures are great. You can see my current Fuelly stats below:

Short trips kill the FE big time. AT's suck too. I'm passing a lot of you people driving so slow, and getting much better FE.

My '07 is averaging 39 MPG - 90% highway, 10% city. Average 75-80mph on highway. Using no efficiency techniques. Driving kinda aggressively actually.
I can't see how it's even possible to average in the 20's. Even if you drove the Yaris with 4 totally flat tires, it would likely still be in the 20's. |

I have a 2012 LE automatic, and always get 38 to 39 mpg. I drive the speed limit start off and slow down smoothly. You must be doing something wrong, or the car has a serious problem. Let us know the outcome!

Your Yaris needs some break in mileage. My Yaris has 42k and is still getting more powerful and fuel efficient! 38 MPG without trying.
