Which Oil/Filter Combo and Duration?

Hello all. I bought a 2007 5sp hatch around 3 months ago and wanted to know what oil/filter combo people ran and at what change interval? I am currently running Mobil EP with a Puralator Synthetic filter and change at 10K.
I drive 2K a wekk on average (courier contract). I also run 100% gas as well as a bottle of Techron before each oil change.

I also would like to know if it is true that a 2007 can run some of the thinner weight gas saving oils.....5w-20 or 0w-20?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

A 10k interval makes sense for your hi miles driving.

I would use a Toyota filter for your application.

Good luck in your quest for 500k!

Toyota filter and a synthetic for 7,500 mis. be good . I use Pennzoil Platinum , Pennzoil Ultra , and Shell full synthetic . They've been 5w-20 and 5w-30 . No difference in F.E. that I'm aware of . Doubt a 0w-20 would give it much of a boost . Do 4,000 > 5,000 mile intervals due to extended warranty through Toyota . Use Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20 in the '11 FIT . These oils can be bought for under $4 a quart when rebates and sales apply . Sometimes under $3 a quart . Last , been using AC Delco oil filters for past few years on the Yaris .

What I'm curious about: did you get a better mileage?

I think our car is doing better with 0W-20 in it. I switched to the Miata wheels about the time I went to 0-20. My mileage has stayed pretty consistent.

So, my logic is: I lost mpg due to losing the LRR tires on factory steelies but gained back what I had lost by switching to 0W-20.

The newest oil that will be coming out will be 0W-16. If you think the 20wt oil is bad, manufacturers are trying to milk out every bit of efficiency that they can because of the pressure being put on them by the government. So, in return, oils are getting thinner. It truly does reduce drag.

A word of caution on the Toyota oil filters, they are some of the least efficient oil filters being manufactured with factory auto-maker branding on them. They're less efficient than Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, & Honda.

Don't attempt to read between the lines here. I'm not saying they're bad. I'm just saying other filters out there are doing better.

10 k

Toyota filter, which I buy on-line for about $4 bucks each. Then either Pennzoil Platinum synthetic or Mobil 1 Extended performance, 5-30.
10,000 miles and the oil still looks pretty good.

Are you finding you are topping up anywhere along the way to your 10,000? If so, about how much are you adding?

Have you ever done a used oil analysis?

oil

No, we have not had to top it off. It may go down a little.

I have not tested it yet but with Toyota manufacturer intervals going to 10,000 miles, I'm pretty sure it is OK.

I didn't realize the OEM interval was being pushed to 10k. Is that with the 1NZ?

I wonder if there's a certain kind of oil that has to be used to get that. I sure wouldn't trust just any ol' oil to go that long.

When I was on AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30, I wasn't losing a drop. All the way up to 14,000 miles, our dipstick never showed less than absolutely tip-top.

Back when I was using Mobil1 5W-30 (first 70,000 miles), I changed every 5k and by the time 5k rolled around, I had lost some oil (may .3~.5 of a quart). I never did analysis on the M1 in the Yaris but I'm going longer and getting better fuel efficiency with the AMSOIL.

I cannot find it specifically, but I found this article on Edmunds and it would be if you use synthetic oil.
http://www.edmunds.com/car-care/stop...-your-oil.html

I know Mobil 1 has an oil that has a 15 k interval. But since you are using Amsoil, you definitely doing OK. I just never got around to a oil analysis. I am tempted to try a 0w-30 for better fuel efficiency. Thanks for your 2 cents. regards

Yeah, I've read that article in the past. More folks need to be exposed to it. I worked a short stint at a quick oil change joint & it's infuriating that they still print their 'reminder' stickers for 3mo/3,000 miles. The educated motoring public knows that it's bull but the ones that are uneducated, continue to be misled.

I'd definitely like to see if Toyota is recommending 10k intervals (much like they came around to eventually recommending 5W-20) in the 1NZ.

You have to read the small print on Mobil1's Extended Performance products. If you are:
1) under warranty
2) severe duty
Then, don't do extended oil change intervals or exceed manufacturers recommendations.

With AMSOIL, the severe duty interval is 15,000 (whether your vehicle is under factory warrant or not does not matter) and normal duty is 25,000 (but the Yaris' little oil filter will have to be changed along the way to 25k just because it's so small, it doesn't have the capacity that a larger oil filter has).

And let's be honest, a lot of people are falling under the severe duty classification and don't even realize it.

What makes you want to go to 0W-30 instead of a 20wt oil? You might gain a little efficiency only when the engine is cold by dropping that first number. As soon as you're up to operating temperature, you're still pushing around a 30wt oil. So, overall, your benefit will be small. Since Toyota says we can run 5W-20, that would be a lot better bang for the fuel-miser-buck. With 5W-20, you'll be pushing a thinner oil at operating temperature which is where most everyone's car is normally. That right there will yield a much better payoff.
