Why the miniscule cupholders in 2018?!?

Ok, so no more of the insanely practical dash level cup-holders we were used to on the 2007. We can live with reaching down in front of the shifter.

But what was Toyota thinking making these new cup-holders a scant 6.5cm in diameter?!? And worse, with zero clearance between the two.

Our extensive KleanKanteen collection which was supposed to be viable for the rest of our lives...has been shelved by this truly bizarre design choice. Its not as though there isnt any more room in that location. Ironically, the single cup-holder at the back of the center console is so wide and shallow that it wont safely hold anything.

ALL the best travel mugs and carafes are over 8cm across. I've just spent an hour trying to find something which will fit (which isn't dollar-store garbage). Closest thing I can find is Contigo's SnapSeal Byron but that lid looks like an overly convoluted bit of mechanism. I just want to sip coffee, not shake up a martini for crying out loud. :)

Any suggestions for stainless steel carafes which will fit? Or any cleaver hacks which dont require permanent disfigurement to the car?

the cup holders SUCK. they hold a plastic bottle of water or maybe a can of soda and not much else. i think the one for the back seat is more normal sized though.
