08' Yaris HB burning oil
Hello Yaris World Community,
In the last three months, my 08' Yaris Hatchback has burned oil almost completely dry. Only when it's near the very end will the Oil Pressure light and Check Engine light come on. Goodyear was unable to help and the Dealer said they would need to do an engine tear down which costs $650, and then fix the problem which they estimated could be up to $2000. The car is nearly 10 years old and I regularly get the vehicle serviced, I love my car. I am not experiencing any kind of odor or smoke of any kind, but I'm wondering what alternatives I might have before I invest that kind of money into an older car. I do intend to buy a new vehicle by years end, but for now, does anyone have any advice as how I can fix the engine for a much cheaper price? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Kevin |

Hey yarisfitch, 173,000 miles, and it for sure is not leaking oil as two mechanics have checked that

Oil level dipstick low pressure indicator check engine light
You fill by regularly checking the dipstick...not waiting for "the very end" or for lights to come on. This type of maintenance leads to an early very very end.
Ditto with coolant level. And brake fluid level. |

Right, but the point here is that this is just now becoming a problem of the engine burning oil. That is precisely why I'm looking for assistance on how to resolve this issue. I now have to keep oil in my car to top it off as the oil level depletes faster than before

Since the second time this has happened, I've been checking the dip stick about every 3 days to verify oil level

defective PCV valve?
My wifes Spark had a issue (they all did) with a poorly designed PCV valve & would suck straight oil right into the intake manifold. Luckily I caught this early and spliced in a catch can. I had to drain it every 2 days until they had a recall with a better part. I still run the catch can but it gets a trace amount in 7500miles

Malibuguy, thanks for the suggestion. With this in mind, i'll see if my mechanic can look at it to see if it warrants replacing. I'm a novice when it comes to cars so all your input is much appreciated

Well theirs the main error to start with. Once that red light comes on for oil.....engine needs to be turned off immediately and not turned on till the oil level is rectified. Also theirs quite often some premature wear if it's neglected to the point of having the dash light go on. Plus this happened twice. :/ That light goes on when theirs no oil pressure.

Also did you have your oil changes done at 5,000km intervals?

Yeah, whenever the MAINT Required light comes on, I have it serviced. This is a new issue that I've now encountered twice. If there is something more simple than an engine tear down that is very costly, I'm hoping to find an alternative fix

Thanks for the advice! I hope that's cheaper than 650 for an engine tear down

At this point, might as well just replace the engine.

If you're just going to get a new car at the end of the year, just keep it full of oil and drive it.
Otherwise, get a used engine and swap it in. |

What weight of oil are you using? My wife's Taurus calls for 5w20, it uses oil when I ran that weight. I put in 10w30 & have no more oil useage.

As stated earlier first to check is the off valve. Then do a leak down test. If it isn't a simple off valve Then I'd just do an engine swap at an an independant mechanic.
If you're engine has been run until the light goes on then it's been run lower than 3 psi (iirc) and could have some damage due to that. A new engine swap should cost around $ 1500 give or take. Yaris engines don't just burn oil like that, either your pc is severely stuck open or something else happened.
