Want to improve your gas milage by 18%-20%?
Apparently it is possible though wrapping your car in golf ball like dimples:
DALLAS, TX--(MARKET WIRE)--Jan 15, 2009 -- SkinzWraps, Inc. (Other OTC:SKZW.PK - News), the vanguard of the vehicle wraps industry, today unveiled a new, patent pending, drag reducing vehicle wrap material called MPG-Plus(TM). The improved fuel economy of a vehicle wrapped in MPG-Plus(TM) as compared to the identical vehicle not wrapped is 18%-20%. MPG-Plus(TM) has been extensively tested at both high and low speeds. MPG-Plus(TM) is now available for commercial use. Because the best use of MPG-Plus(TM) is in large scale applications; fleets operators, trucking companies, the military and municipalities will be a primary focus of SkinzWraps' initial push. To that end, SkinzWraps will immediately reach out to these types of clients within its extensive client database. "We have worked on this ground breaking product in skunk works secrecy for almost a year and a half. This is American ingenuity and American hard work at it best. From that flash of genius to the issuance of this release, I have personally witnessed every step in the process to bring this innovative product to market, so I am very confident when I say with full conviction that MPG-Plus(TM) is going to change everything," says Peter C. Salaverry, Chairman & CEO of SkinzWraps, Inc. http://www.skinzwraps.com/news.php#79

Sounds like scamola to me.
If anything, the grooves would probably cause more drag IMO

If I bought every gadget that saves me gas, I would be getting over 100mpg.

The gain (if any) would probably not offset the cost of the wrap. It's like paying $24k for a Prius.

If you want this for free "improvement", just park beside a driving range at a public golf course.

come on guys, it sounds counterintuitive but it makes sense. But indeed, it's all down to the cost, and the REAL results...

Exactly, it has been scientifically proven that the dimples on a golf ball do allow it to travel more easily through the air. However, I doubt that the concept will work as well when applied to a vehicle...anyone willing to take a ball peen hammer to their Yaris to find out?!?
Cheers! M2 |

LOL I can't add any more than what's been said. Yes, it has been proven to reduce drag by a little, which will improve mileage by a little, but it is such a costly and involved procedure that it likely isn't worth it, and would likely be best to be done by the OEMs during the manufacturing process.

Isn't it odd that the example car used is the boxy and very un-aerodynamic xB?

I had a car that i hated, and i went thru some tough times, and i was lactose intolerant and hypoglycemic and didn't realize i had either at the time which made me more than a tad bit grumpy and hugely irrational, and well i beat the everloving crap out of that car, literally with my fists and elbows and heels. I put roughly semicircular indentations into EVERY body panel on that car. (i thouroughly apologize for driving it like an idiot too, please forgive me i was sick) And ya know what, even though i golf ball dimpled it the mileage didn't get any better.
