Alternator voltage output.

Having a slight issue when driving and has been happening for a long time. Between gear changes I notice my headlights dim a little then go back to how they were I also notice that my gauges that I have installed also look a little dim. This problem happens about 90% of the time after starting the car and continues the other 10% the lights are always bright and my gauge lights are bright. Battery is new voltage when car is running 13.8 when I put loads on high beams and blower motor on high voltage jumps to 14v then drops to 13.4 then back to 13.8 or a little lower.not sure if I should but a new regulator and brushes in the alternator. Any help would be appreciated.

If it doesn't drop below 13.1 to 13.5, then the alternator is fine. You may be looking at more of a corrosion issue with the battery terminals, Battery connector pins (large ones on the back of the positive terminal) or with one of the ground straps (battery to chassis, engine to chassis, etc.)

Thanks I should have said that all connections and grounds are clean the only corrosion I found was a minute amount on the power cable coming off the alternator. I decided to pull the alternator and clean the contact points for brushes and voltage regulator. Their was some corrosion where the brushes and regulator connect together. So now I am idling at 14v with no load and about 13.89v with high beams, stereo and the blower going. I guess I will see later if my gauges are bright or dim.

Was your regulator the sealed version like the picture below or was it the type with two open holes near the connector?

http://www.aspwholesale.com/ I found a Nippon denso altenator repair kit for $72 bearings, brush holder and updated regulator and the rectifier for $42. I may just order the parts if it gets any worse or it bothers me enough.
