Help ID mystery popping sound from rear?
One time only (so far,) but it has me stumped. 2007 manual HB, 93k. Just did an oil change (on ramps,) drove twice 2 blocks to a recycling station, pulled back into garage, lowered door, and heard a noticible "pop" from the rear of the car, kind of a pop/hiss, like something released some pressure. One time only, so far. Possible smell of oil or gas, pretty faint, not familiar. First I check the garage door, to see if something got caught, broken cable, but nothing there. Then I look at the tires, all OK, no deflations. Test drive, rides OK. Check rear HB struts, did one de-pressurize? No, both OK. There was some chunks of ice I drove over pulling into garage before the noise, but none close by the door. Gas-pressurized shock release pressure? Rear of car bounces OK. 3/4 tank of fuel, opened filler cap, no noticable problems there. End of winter in an area that uses lots of mag-cloride, studded tires still on (Nokians,) Nothing in the area that I could have driven over when I pulled in. When I opened the HB, thought I might have smelled a trace of the mystery smell. No leaking stuff in hatch area of car. Wonder about the gas tank vapor-recovery system, but looks intact (no smell) when I looked under the rear of the car. Any suggestions?
