Rear parking sensors keep beeping when nothing is behind car

Hi,

My '06 Yaris (Europe) has 4 parkingsensors in the rear bumper. When i switch to reverse gear (stick, not automatic transmission) it will give a beep, then as the car gets closer to a wall or something, the time between beeps will get shorter, untill a solid beeeeeeep when car is reaaally close to a object.

However, since a few days ago, it sometimes constantly beeps (solid beep) even when the area behind the car is clear.

I have cleaned the sensors with a soft rag, but they weren't dirty.

Does anyone know if the car was fitted with this system from factory, or is it a aftermarket set?

What steps could i take to find/resolve the culprit of this?

Not sure if Yaris ever got them from factory, but they may have been dealer installed. Factory ones are easily diagnosed with a scanner as you can see what each sensor is reading. With aftermarket it may be a little tougher, but you may be able to unplug one at a time and see if the beeping stops. Note that it may disable the system completely with any one unplugged.
If that doesn't work, you will probably have to use a multimeter and compare the resistance of each sensor.

For the MK2 Yaris, the parking sensors were a genuine Toyota accessory, but they are not connected to the car's network for diagnostics.

Here is the Toyota troubleshooting guide for the system:
