"Brainless" question about AC - Toyota Yaris Forums

Or "dumb girl" question, if you like; this isn't necessarily peculiar to the Yaris, but should the fresh air vent be kept open generally or in the "recirculating" position??? I know you need recirulate to defrost thanks to that little icon...

But for normal driving/sitting?

I thought this was a question specifically for me at first - got kind of excited for a minute there.

The recirculating thing is good when you're running AC on super hot days, but if you run it that way in the winter your windows will fog like crazy. I learned this when I had my Accord.

I suppose it depends on humidity and outside temperature... also remember that recirculating air is not a bad idea if you're stuck behind a garbage truck

The answer is "it depends". (and I agree a better subject line would be good... tell us WHAT the question is about in the subject)

In a car without AC, you'll have major fogging problems in cold and rain unless you keep the fresh air coming in (and blowing at the windshield in particular). With AC, the AC dehumidifies, so you can run recirculate and it might even be better to do so. In cold and damp weather, it's all about humidity control. That's why the Yaris automatically kicks the AC on with the defrost setting, to dehumidify.

In better weather, recirculating will give you cooler AC (like Kentucky girl said), which you might need if it's really hot. But, it's largely a matter of preference... there's something to be said for fresh air. Or depending on where you live, maybe not!

I generally leave mine vented except when it's really hot and I need the extra cooling.

The best position is to keep it open allowing fresh air to enter the cabin. The cabin filter does a great job grabbing dust and what not, but it does not help with odors-so I switch to recirculate only when behind a stinky diesel or a old car that's belching smoke. If you leave in on recirculate more often than not you might get mold growing in your ventilation system with musty odors to follow. Keep it on fresh-it works better.

Haha what a coincidence. And I have to keep mine on fresh air or my windows fog like crazy in the winter.

It all comes down to personal preference and where you live and the weather there.

One thing though, my dealer instructed me to leave the vents open when I'm done using the car (mainly if I use the a/c). He told me this helps prevent the a/c system from staying moist and eventually producing that stink/mildewy scent that people sometimes experience a couple years into car ownership.

I had a total block of ice under the dash in an old 280Z once....it blocked all flow of air!

It was extremely humid out and the fresh air condensed and froze. Recirculating may have been able to dehumidify the air before it did this (maybe).
