Custom Short Ram Air Intake Problem

Hey everyone! I recently decided to replace my stock air intake with a custom build of my own from Autozone. I did everything as instructed as far as not breaking the MAF, and properly fitting all tubing. My problem came when I started the engine and the ram air intake causes the car to struggle while idling and eventually (30 seconds or so) the engine will cut off. Every startup is fine however, and figuring that I broke the MAF, I reinstalled the stock air intake and the car runs fine. I have no idea what to do or what's going wrong. I also made sure to install the MAF EXACTLY how it was originally installed with the short ram air intake. I also disconnected the battery for 15 minutes trying to reset the onboard CPU. I'm really at a loss as to why this is not working. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks ya'll!

P.S. I LOVE my Yaris ;) (picture of my custom built intake is included as well)

What does that connect to? I'm used to seeing intakes that connect directly to the throttle body. I'm guessing yours doesn't as I don't see a nipple for the vacuum line.

It also looks like the air could be very turbulent passing the maf given the way you've constructed it.

All I did was remove the stock intake from the rubber tube that came stock with a "3" on the tube.I'm not too experienced with the smaller tubes that need to be reconnected after removing the entire setup from the throttle body, so I just took the easy route and had the intake connect to the same tube that the stock intake does so I wouldn't have to mess with the other sensor /tubing. Could this be the problem? Thanks for your help btw.

In truth the problem may be that the tubing is too large. The sensor on this car is VERY tricky. I had built a custom intake for mine and the slightly larger tubing is what caused the CEL and rough idling.

same thing happened to me couple of years back when i tried to make an SPECTRE brand intake FAIL!

@45k k&n oem style= $50
@70k fujita CAI=230

@ 114k stalling in the middle of the night due to flooded road intake sucked water= PRICELESS

now back to home made short ram checkers intake SPECTRE brand with 2 inch(diameter) pipe from home depot=$10

final note MAF sensor likes small diameter which is 2 1/4"

There's really no way around it. Unless you're using a standalone EMS and plot your own MAF readings.

a 3" tube will flow more air at a slower velocity, so the stock ecu won't send nearly enough fuel. While a 2" will increase air speed slightly and richen the mix up.
