Custom Lift Back Hidden Sealed Woofer Box

You will Need:

3/4" MDF ( I got two 2ft x4ft sheets)

Drill (Small bit to pre drill screws and large 1/2" bit to start the band saw cutting the sub inset out)
Gorilla glue
tape Measure
Screws 1.5" works nice
Square
Mounting Ring
Auto Carpet
Elmers Spray Glue
Terminal (so you can connect the wires to the sub)

Just the text:
1. gut out the back.. take out the spare.
2. Trace the spare cover (I cut out the nubs that normally would slide in.. it sits in alot easier when you can just drop it in.
3. make sure it fits nicely.
4. Find out what volume you need for the sub you purchased. My sub needed .675 i believe .. so i made it about 19"x7"x14" (those are outside Diameter) Dont forget to find the mounting depth of the subwoofer too so you can make sure the box is deep enough. and add the 3/4" from the inset ring. i would actually reccomend trying to double ring the sub so you have a whole 1.5" from the woofer to the flat of the shelf. so the woofer doesn't hit the mat when you throw it back on to hide the woofer.
5. trace the outside diameter of the woofer to cut out the inset.
6.Drill a hole so you can get the band saw started
7. Cut out the hole.
8. Affix the Ring underneath the top so that the sub is counter sunk. I glued and screwed that ring on. (being sealed is key)
9. Build the box (glue all sides) Screw sides together so its super tight
10. Wait until tomorrow and then shave all the glue that expanded off.
11. get some Carpet for the interior or top of the shelf.
12.Spray down the whole top of the unit then lay and smooth the carpet down..
13. Cut the circle out so you can mount the sub.
14. Get a terminal and trace the hole you need to drill so you can insert and screw it in.
15. Connect the wires inside from the inside of the terminal to the woofer
16. Screw that sucker down and get ready for the bump!

Hopefully that will do it for you guys that's what i can remember from the first time this was posted.

Text and Pics :)
Gut out the trunk

Trace the tire area cover
*Note .. didnt know this until i was done .. but dont bother to trace the part that slides into the little cubbies in the back. just round those off with the jig saw.. if you put the nubs in there you wont be able to get the box in the trunk with the bottom chamber attatched... which will be necessary.. this way you can just drop it in.

Cut and make sure it fits

measure and cut

Two boards 13x6.75"
Two boards 17.5x6.75"
one Board 19x13

Trace the outside of the sub woofer this is so we can make the woofer set in the box rather than on the box.. you can see on the picture the placement of my 10" circle

Drill a hole somewhere on the circle so that you can get the jig saw into area to cut the circle out

I salvaged the front of a woofer box i had for the mounting ring.. but you can usually order a ring or look at the manual for your sub to get the mounting

you can also take the box the woofer came in.. alot of times they are made so the woofer sits in it.. take out the carboard and trace it to make the circle it mounts in.

After you have that cover it in glue, position it and screw it down.. it helps to drill some small holes before you screw it in so that you dont expand the MDF

here is what it will look like when its

mounted

Once you have the ring on there assemble the sides and bottom ofthe chamber from the wood you cut before..

glue all touching edges before drilling and screwing.. that way they are sealed. when you get the box made you should use the glue like caulk and do all the seams on the inside to ensure a good seal.

Then i set the sucker in there

next step will be heading to Radio shack to get a wiring terminal.. and then to a craft store for spray glue.. then to the local auto carpet store to get enough carpet to cover it.

I'm hoping that there will be enough weight with it all on there and padding with the carpet on there from keeping the box from hopping.
also there is about and 1" below the box so you dont have to worry about it vibrating the bottom...

at first i was considering using that hand bolt they use to keep the spare down the lock the box to the body... make it really resonate.. but i figured it wasnt worth the hassle

then when that is all set its time to install the amp.. probably under the drivers seat.
Thanks guys! thanks to Boyd too for the inspiration!

Final Pics:anyway.. here are the pics:
head unit pioneet DEH P 4000UB

Subwoofer... where is it?

wooop there it is!

lol i had to tilt it because i stripped a screw and had to drill re screw the woofer down to seal right

depending on the throw of the woofer you might want to counter sink the woofer a little more.

i think im going to be doing one of these very soon.

I plan to only use one SX12 and make the whole top out of Plexiglass though, I love seeing the subwoofer move.

Cant Wait, thanks for the write up.

i still intend on using the hatchback cover to block all view to passer by's, its mostly a selfish love of watching the sub do its thing. I dont think many other people enjoy watching a speaker go up and down but I love it haha.

I put the mat over mine.. i dont keep that black shelf thing n there.. because i need to put the dog crate in the back twice a week...

I was considering throwing another sheet of MDF on top though so that the woofer has more throw room.

I made some modifications today..

I went to my parents house and found an old Bandpass Plexi front that went to an old box of mine.. decided to dremel the heck out of it and incorporate it into my box to jazz it up.. thoughts?!

I love the changes you made. Very nice. Totally inspired. And cargo space is a must since I have my goalie bag stuffed in the back constantly.

Thank you!

I'm so glad you reposted this. I'm finally getting around to installing my sub, amps, etc. this week. Looks like I got almost the exact same Pioneer head unit as yourself. I purchased the DEH-P500UB, it'll be here Dec 24. I'm super excited to install it. It looks like the weather will be perfect for an installation like this.

Just out of curiosity, do you like your 4000?
