May not be a bad thing. The Versa has been the best seller by far the last couple of years. And the Fit's interior is the most praised in the segment.

Maybe Toyota's on to something.

Are you kidding, the Versa is ugly!

And I don't like the 3rd gen Yaris either, looks too much like a Matrix.

Just another good reason to hang onto my 08 hatch!

Cheers! M2

Agreed. I was just pointing out that the Versa has easily beaten the competition in sales for the last two years. I don't know why.

But even though the new Yaris shares some ques with the Versa, it manages to look much better - particularly the headlights.

The news is not good as far as the interiors either. They are pretty much exactly the same as the Fit:

Honda Fit:
But the Honda FIT has a better erogonomics overall. And it doesnt' look as dull.

I don't know why the Versa is selling more. Maybe more incentives. I was partial to the design when it came out. Its certainly aged. The sedan is that's saying a lot coming from an ECHO owner

I'm sure Nissan is happy regardless. I think maybe one reason is the Versa is really a C segment car. Its on par if not bigger than the Sentra (interior volume). Or pretty darn close. You know Americans. love their big cars. Of course Nissan is deceptive in marketing a C segment car in a B segment market. Of course it will have the most space, its in a different class. Hopefully the next gen will look better.

i personally think with the color panels, the yaris interior actually looks nicer...i have always felt the fit interior is a bit too busy:(the question is, will we have that option without having to upgrade to a model we dont want?)

Agreed. I am SOOOO glad my 95 Accord crapped out this year and "let" me buy the 2011 Yaris. I would be so annoyed if I had missed the original style (even if the 2009+ is slightly updated)...

My guess is no earlier than late summer of 2011 to go on sale. There may be auto shows that may have it in display before that though. The new Camry should be on sale before the new Yaris and it is still in Toyota's vault.

Even though most of us like them, they've cost Toyota countless Yaris sales.

In my observations, a large percentage of those that rejected the Yaris for something else was specifically because of the center gauges. Sad, but true.
People not used to them are just turned off by them and won't consider the Yaris no matter how good it is.

but that 6 speed didnt accomplish what everyone seems to think it would in the yaris....the Versa 6 speed still revs around 3000 rpm's at 70 mph.

You've hit it on the head.

I read countless comments on the center IP. I know i'm bias but I have no qualms about it. I like that its different and quirky. But I know most don't care for that. Funny how people want something different but when change comes, nope! I think center gauges work in small cars cause the space issue.

and here i was thinking that they just separated the gears to stay in the powerband more easily (or to stay at consistently lower rpms w/ city driving)

you were thinking the 6th would be a super overdrive?

I prefer the center mounted guages.
Ever have to drop a steering column just to the instrument panel?
UGH!

i was just saying that a vast majority of calls for the yaris to have a 6 speed manual was so the highway rpm's would be lower and presumably increase mpg's.

ive always said a 6 speed wouldnt necessarily mean that at all, as evidenced by what they did with the versa.

on to the center gauges. that never bothered me so much on the yaris as much as the fact that the execution of it was so cheap looking. on balance, i prefer the new interior.

I'm glad the gauges are away and out of the drivers view. it forces the driver to focus more on the road than on the fancy dials in front. it did take me awhile getting used to glancing away but its easy I dont concentrate on speed much, just set the cruise and roll.
RPMs do need to be higher at highway to make up for wind resistance and to help channel more air into the engine for better efficiency.

unless a person is 4'5" there eyes are well above the steering wheel, thus looking forward puts your eyes on the road. looking at gauges either to your right or behind your steering wheel requires, by definition, your eyes to come momentarily off the road.
