New CAI!
Sorry for the bad quality picture, don't have a camera right now. When I install it Tuesday night I will put up more pictures. It's from K&N, was about $300 plus taxes. It looks very different from other cold air intakes, I hope it works.

Now that I look closer at the instruction page, it says it's for 2001-2006 Yaris 1.5L. We have the 2006. So I hope it would fit if that's what k&n says it's for. Just looks really different.

I'm kind of angry right now as the intake didn't fit. At all. Wasted $360 on it. Guess I'll have to order the AEM when I get the money. Well, if anyone has a 2001 to 2005 Echo or Yaris and wants to try this thing out, let me know. Sell it for $200 CAD.

Bummer. Can you post the product # here so as to avoid a repeat incident for someone else? Good luck selling it, I'm sure you'll find a buyer.

You can't modify it to fit? If it can conceivably work, then just take it to a shop and have them tell you how much it would be to correct the situation.

It's hard to describe, but the tube goes right into the big metal...thing...that holds the radiator in place. The tube can't even sit properly without the filter even on it. I thought about cutting the tube just before the second bend, but the air filter is too large to fit in the space between the rad and the transmission. So instead of cutting it and have it not work, I decided just to leave the CAI alone. If someone is willing to take if off my hands and give it a shot on their echo then I'll sell, but otherwise I'll just let it sit around.
Now I have another question. If it has been already asked, then sorry, but what CAI is better for price/quality/performance wise... the Fujita or the AEM? |

I went with AEM. They made the TRD intake for toyota. Install was simple and it sounds great.

Well, today I decided to keep the intake and try to modify it to fit. I cut the tube above the second bend, as short as it would go. It just bends down now after attaching to the TB and the filter sits between the plastic rad fan baffling and the transmission near the plugs at the top. It actually fits and works. No bogging down or hesitation on the engine yet, I hope there won't be. I'm driving the car for an hour or so tonight so I shall see what happens. It sounds really good, nice and throaty. Also felt like more pick-up between 3-4000 rpm.
Since the CAI now turned short ram intake gets air from the bottom of the engine bay, it seems to be pulling in a bit cooler air than the normal short rams that keep the filter at the top. People have said that after adding an intake their car runs lean for a week or so, which would make the engine run a bit hot. I'm always paranoid about things breaking on me, so I'm a little worried that the car will heat up more than normal. It shouldn't, though, but the lack of a real temp gauge makes me nervous. Anyway, I will post up pictures of it later tonight. I really hope all goes well now that it actually works! |
