I'm a worry-wort but I worry about RPM's

I finally had my Yaris up to 70 MPH this morning, the tach said 3000 RPM's - my old 4 cylinder Cavalier I traded in only turned over approx. 2000 RPM's at 70 MPH. Isn't 3000 RPM's harder on an engine? I know I'm probably being worried over nothing, but I'm still babying my Yaris since it's only got 550+ miles on it. It feels like a toy compared to driving my old Cavalier. And I used to own a Honda CRX years ago but never paid attention to the tach/RPM's on that car.

3000 rpms is nothing

whether a certain RPM range is hard on an engine is based on
the specific engine and design.

yes... more rpm's are harder on an engine than lower rpm's, but
even 5000 rpm's is nothing for the yaris. change the oil at the recommended
intervals, and wind it to 5000 all day and night, forever. no problem

My Cavalier was a 5 speed and a 2.2L engine....but thanks for your opinions. I know I shouldn't worry since it's under warranty for the next 3 years.

This is normal for a small 4 cylinder engine with a 5 speed. My Matrix XRS with a 6 speed at 70mph was at around 2800 rpms.

Absolutely the norm.

The smaller the engine, the higher the RPM. 6 and 8 cylinder engines spin at <2000 rpm at that speed.

Haha, I wish my mustang gt cruised at under 2000 rpm. Currently it cruises at 2500 rpm, but that's because I have 4.10s in it. Stock it's just above 2000 rpm.

Yeah! Displacement is a factor... as well as the other factor - gearing! I would imagine with a 4:11 posi and a large bore cu engine you would be cranking the high RPM's cruising...

Cheers!

Honestly I don't see why people don't invest in a 6 speed tranny swap for the yaris, acceleration and mpg would improve dramatically. D-4D Diesel Engine with 6 speed manual from Europe's yaris would give you about 15-20 mpg increase if you know how to drive.

Give the DIESEL credit for most of that mileage increase.
That said, a six-speed manual would be sweet.

I want one! I hate the unnecessarily high RPMs on the highway, and my cruising speed is only 50.

Honestly I'd pay $2000 for a 6 speed swap.

If you're that bad about RPM's then be glad you don't own an S2000. I'm working on getting one of those eventually (need a better job first) but the engine in the first generation revs up to 9,000, and even it's cruising RPM's get pretty high. Kinda similar to Mazda's wankel engine.
