News story about trailer hitch flying through Yaris windshield

I just saw this story on the 11 o'clock news about a car hitting a trailer hitch, on I-95 in Richmond, VA, and sending it flying through the windshield of a Yaris sedan:

Wow.

Twice I've seen an extra tire mounted on a rim bounce out of pickup bed and bounce into oncoming traffic, but both times traffic was far back enough that drivers had time to react to what happened. With this trailer hitch, I wonder if the driver had any time to correct, or was just lucky that it hit the middle of the windshield.

South Florida still has the most dangerous drivers in the U.S. (IMO), but Houston is solidifying its title (in my mind) as having (despite the niceness of the people and the politeness of people in parking lots) on the road the laziest and most selfish drivers. Today I was driving south on I-45 and got off onto the southbound feeder road. A driver was at the edge of a driveway that opened up onto the (one way) feeder road. Rather than going to the end of the block and taking the under the freewy u-turn that bypasses the signal and puts you on the feeder on the other side of the freeway, taking that to the next exit, doing the same type of u-turn and coming back to THE DRIVEWAY BEFORE HIS STARTING POINT....but noooooo, that would be too time consuming and inconvenient for such a precious person .............. he instead HEADED INTO ONCOMING/OPPOSING TRAFFIC ON THE ONE WAY FEEDER HOPING HE'D BE ABLE TO GET TO THE DRIVEWAY HE WANTED TO ACCESS BEFORE THE ONCOMING CAR IN THAT LANE COULD BE UPON HIM.

It's part of the disease of instant gratification: I need my car to take me there now.

Yep....and I was so flabbergasted, I didn't notice the age of the driver.

Something close to this happened near Birmingham AL a few years ago, but was a large chunk of concrete from the terrible I-20. A car kicked this chuck up into the air and right through the passenger side of the windshield, killing the man's Wife almost instantly. Everyday our roadways are getting more and more dangerous from people not paying attention, rushing to get here and there, and not securing items in and/or on their vehicles!!

Jeez, that's flipping rough! I always try to stop and pick up any road debris I see laying about. A semi truck hit a big metal lid of some sort and it stuck in the side of my mom's Impala a few years ago. Luckily it just hit the fender. It's pretty horrifying that people just run over stuff like that.

I can honestly say that Truck drivers for the most part consider the road their own territory as they are on it all the time, and the rest of us are on their turf. They could not care less about our safety as evidenced by all the shredded tire treads all over the highways left for someone else to run over and die. And don't dare follow them or they will swing over onto the shoulder and kick up a bunch of debris to pepper your car with.

The end of the month can be interesting. Couches, chairs, and other fly off trucks on moving day.
