Have him take the head off and he'll see all the sludge and shit inside there... People have no idea what dirty oil does to all the bearings inside the engine.

I had a '82 Subaru with 188K on it that I only changed the filter on it occasionally. I burned and seeped oil at a 1 qt/month rate. That equates to 3 gallons a year.

When the tranny began to make a load grinding sound I drove it to a junk yard and left it there with the title on the passenger seat.

He would say "So what theres sludge in my engine? Its got 88,000 miles on it doesnt it? In a few years I will buy a new car and I havnt given the oil companies a dime by changing the oil like they want me to!"

"Say...why you so INTERESTED in what I do anyway? You wouldnt happen to be changing YOUR oil, would you?"

So you never changed the oil just the filter?

See thats what I getting at and my neighbors point exactly. If the car runs without oil changes....why do them?

In tody's jargon, it's called risk management. Sure it runs. But for how long? When will it quit? At a "good" time, like when trying to start it for your Monday morning commute? Or at a bad time, like when trying to merge on an interstate?

Mobil 1 0-40 and a M1 Filter every 5k miles, its got 87k on it now, ive had 6 blackstone labs samples done and none of them show any wear metals. Of those 87k, 2500 or so were put on around a race track. Still have not had a failure

" Is there a longer version of the 103 filter for the Yaris? " .

Yes there is . TOYOTA ( Denso ) . I think it's the 90915-YZZF1 ( correct me if wrong ) . There's a more expensive TRD oil filter as well .

Yeah, TRD filters are basically K&N filters... I really love the quality, I just don't like spending $11 on a filter.

The Denso filter is good quality, and run $2.50 from rockauto.com

10,000 miles.

I use both Mobil 0w20 and Pennzoil 0w20. I use a K&N Oil filter with the nut on top!

I have 87k miles on it. Never had a break down or in the shop.

I also have a magnetic drain plug, no metal flakes on it when I change my oil.

That makes me laugh.

My father didnt change the oil on his cars either...not to stick it "to the man" but in his mind if the engine light wasn't coming on, there is nothing to worry about or to do.

His cars typically got an oil change at the dealership he traded them in to for his next car. Typically every 5 to 6 years, and 50-60,000 miles.

Dont know where I got my OCD-about-maintenance gene from, but Im a stick to the book kind of guy when it comes to vehicle maintenance.

My old man NEVER had an engine failure.

Neither have I.

Oil: Whatever catches my eye in the basement in 5W20/5W30 (usually buy a couple of bottles of whatever was on sale)

yea, but things like efficiency are affected. And when you are paying 50¢ a gallon it really doesn't matter, but when you are paying $3.50, 5 mpg can make a difference. And i am sure that person who didn't change the oil didn't change any other fluid either, and that can also kill gas mileage.

Question..I used to have an s10 truck. The 2 wheel drive called for a pf41 filter and the 4 wheel drive called for a pf51 filter which was a much longer filter. I started using the longer filter on my 2 wheel drive truck thinking more filter capacity is better. Is there a longer version of the 103 filter for the Yaris?
I believe the Corolla filter is longer and fits perfectly, or it could be the matrix. if you search the forums, their was a member that bought them by the box from the dealer.

for me, local mechanics are charging dirt cheap for oil changes. $16 for everything for a synthetic oil change.
