I remeber when I picked up my yaris there was this sticker on the glove box..saying something about after the car is turned off it tests the gas tank for leaks or something and you would hear a noise..

I will see if I can find the sticker when I get home from work

Ive had that noise before on exhaust manifold shrouds and electric cooling fans continuing to run after the engine is off or if the temp is ok the fan slowing down.

Usually it is the exhaust cooling down. It is normal.

Th popping kind of noise I have been told is the oil dripping back down in the oil pan. I am a diesel mechanic and we hear it all the time, and it can also be the metals parts cooling down as stated in another post.

and i think the gas tank thing only happens 5hrs after it has been sitting there. and ya its either the oil dripping into the pan or cooling metal. I hear a weird noise when I'm in reverse, like a heatshield is loose and it only happens in reverse. Anyone else hear this.

Don't worry about it. I have heard everything from bulldozers to motorcycles do it.

I have heard that kind of noise coming out from other cars (under similar situations) too. I believe there is no problem.

I'm hearing this everyday when I back out of my driveway. I thought the same thing, sounds like a heatshield or something rattling for a couple of seconds. It's only in reverse and I only notice it when it's first started up.

I get a "rattling" sound when I put my car in reverse. Don't have to be moving, but it also makes the sound when I'm backing up...

Re the last two posts by Dawn Eshelman and rstb88.
I have heard the same rattling noise too. I mentioned it to the service adviser the last time I took my car to the dealership for oil change. I guess the problem did not occur there and so nothing was done. Sometimes, I still hear the same noise when I engage the reverse gear whilst stepping on the brake.

I have heard this noise on two different cars in the past, both toyota...one was an older corolla(1990/1999) and the other was a 95 camry... both were the motor mounts going bad. When in reverse the motor mount lets the engine rub against the mount and causes vibration on the car and if it gets bad you can feel it in the steering wheel. But these are newer cars so I would hope that is not the problem but might be worth checking out. I can tell you how I found it on the cars, if you care to know just ask...thanks,abattle
